whats the best way to run a gsr swap in a 90 crx ??
planning on doing a gsr swap and wondering whats the best way to run the gsr motor?? any ideas what ecu to use and such, thanks
There are two things that are frequently changed when a GSR motor is run in a CRX. And they are the ECU and transmission. With the ECU, it is best NOT to try to run this motor with a different ECU. Many CRX swappers use a PR3/PW0 because they don't want to deal with the wiring changes. But this is not a good way to go for a few reasons. One is the fact that the PR3/PW0 will run a B18C lean. And trying to deal with this will cost alot and/or produce less than satisfactory results. Also, using a PR3/PW0 requires the use of a pre-1992 B16A distributer. The ECU and distributer are hard to find and expensive to buy when purchased 'a la carte' (not part of a swap package). Furthermore, if you live in California, you will not likely pass a smog ref with this setup. The P72 GSR ECU is required by law for a legal GSR swap here in California. So do yourself a favor and either do your own rewiring or buy adaptor harnesses. It will probably be cheaper in the long run. And the motor will run MUCH better.
Because of the difficulty of running a hydraulic transmission in a CRX, people often go with cable B16A transmissions. This is in some ways a good thing and in some ways a bad thing. On the positive side, the shorter gearing of B16A transmissions improves acceleration. But on the negative side, freeway revs are increased. And the B18C does not handle long term high revs as well as a B16A. So if you do alot of freeway driving, you might want to look into a way to use the GSR transmission. Place Racing makes a bracket to mount this transmission. But I do not know of anyone who makes an actual actuator.
