how much boost on stock head bolts????
how much boost can stock ls headbolts and gasket hold???? Im putting my turbo on this week, and the wastegate has a 9## spring in it. Will the stock headbolts hold this amount of boost??? What is the worst thing that will happen if i dont change them out? Just blow the head gasket, or will it do some serious damage to the engine. Im planning on getting arp's but i am gonna get another longblock with less miles on it soon, and dont want to waste the money on this motor. Thanks
we have run 30psi on our h22 with stock headbolts before they released arp's for the h22. Doesnt mean you can do it all the time but it lasted a few passes w/o problems. the headbolts are only like 120.00 and you can use them in your new motor, why not invest in them now??
but, what type of damage are we talking about if i blow the gasket while pushing 9psi. any serious engine damage????? or just a blown gasket????? Would there be any way that soooo much coolant would get in the cylinders and cause the engine to hydro lock??? Anyone out there blown headgasket under boost??? what happened to the motor?
I'm getting the feeling that you think that the headbolts/gasket are the weakest link in your engine. this is not the case. You will destroy your ringlands and then break a rod WAY before the headgasket or bolts go. 10psi seems to be the magic number for a D-series block, and probably not too much more for a b-series. as the broken record says: "it's all about the tunining"...you can blow your motor with 5psi, easy, if you don't know what you're doing with your fuel and timing.
another good thing about the arp headstuds are that you can use them over and over and over again. on stock head bolts, it is recommended that you replace them whenever you take them out.
i have seen 15lbs on stock head bolts at about 400hp to the wheels.. but you should change it with anything more than 15lbs and 400hp just to be on the safe side..

i personally have seen 1.3bar(19.11psi) on many race nights without a problem,
i have stock headbolts and a 3mm headgasket on a b16. other things are gonna go way before the headbolts. but possibly the gasket

If the gasket blows and you keep driving..you could warp your head from overheating...bout all I can think of right now.
warp the head and drive around with alot of smoke coming out of your car. you shouldnt be worried about the head gasket and bolts you should be worried about pistons and rods.
