Default AEM stand alone

Going through some serious work this winter.

I am curious about anyones experiences with the AEM standalone. Good, bad, use it again, reliable, etc.

All comments are welcome.

Cheers.

everything I have heard about it is awesome. Completely tuneable, basically limitless, able to make changes and save or delete them if you like them or not, able to have hundreds of maps that u can load and unload. no need to have a OBD1 ecu and adapter, it plugs right in. Mine will be installed in the next few weeks I will be doing a review after I get it installed to help with the pros and cons of what I come across. stay tuned.

I'm still working on mine.

It's an amazing system, but it's complicated as hell. The newest version of the software helped a lot, between installing it and doing a couple tweeks to the tables I have managed to get the car to idle and start like stock. My only remaining problem is a little lag on the throttle when I rapidly depress it. It kind of pauses to catch its breath before it takes off.

I'm going to get it on the dyno in early January for some power tuning. Right now it's pig rich (O2 voltage is always at 1V, so it's rich off the scale). However I can take it to redline under boost with no problems.

IMO, it's the best standalone on the market. However it's not for the faint of heart or people who can't get support.

Give Ross a call at Technik as he's been playing with the system since its introduction I believe.

He has it on his ITB 5th gen hatch....

There was a lot of bugs in the early version of the software. So many that it was almost impossible to work with. The system would just lock up right in the middle of tuning it. For the first cuple versions I averaged 2 reboots an hour while working on it.

Since they've released firmware .89 and the new software though, there's been no problems. It loads correctly, runs great and never locks up. BIG IMPROVEMENT. The new basemaps are really good too, most people couldn't start the car with the first ones.

An amazing system. Using it in my Civic.
So far, all that has been untapped on my AEM is the Boost Controller and then fuel tables. But there is so much more to go thru. The traction control, scramble boost, data logging, etc.

One thing is, u need a person to tune it who knows their ****. Cuz they can potentially be trying to optimize the machine for days and not get anywhere..it is that complex.

Not yet.

That'll be added in the next firmware release.

I've heard its hard as hell to learn how to use....

I have a buddy that had it and got rid of it because no one could tune it. Hopefully others have had better luck.

For those that have the system...who/where do you know in Cali that can actually tune it? Do you have to take it to AEM to have them tune it for you...or can you go to someplace like AEBS/IB/R&D? Doesn't do too much good to have an awesome system in your car that you can't get properly tuned...at least with Hondata you know that there are a lot of places that can tune it for you.

JN who plays devils advocate not to be an ***, but to shed light on the possible problems so that the product can recieve its worthy praise.
