Well my SMSP cat is about two weeks old now and now I hear a rattling noise. At first I thought maybe my gaskets or bolts were loose, but I checked them all and they were all fine. then i tap the underside of the cat and i hear the same rattling noise. Also my car is spitting out metal shavings from the muffler. I think the metal shavings were from the donut gasket. When I drive around the rattling only makees it self noticeable around 1800 rpm in every gear.
My question is for the people that have blown out their cats. When the brick is loose inside, does it make a rattling at all rpm ranges or just one certain rpm range.?
I'm just trying to figure out if the cat is a total loss or not. Going to the dyno day tomorrow, so I guess I will try and shake whatever is in there out tomorrow morning. Thanks for any help.

Mine is about a month old. No rattles, but it does smell like a couple'a smelly ones are getting by me every time that I run it semi-hard. SMSP CS 94066.
Check underrated99si's posts. His drama is well documented.

why dont you unbolt the cat and look at the cat and see how the ceramic catalyst material is doing. it might just be a heatshield too. but metal shavings is a little odd and why do you think it is from the donut??
the silver stuff that comes off the donut i think is the paint and not metal. my donut is like that too, but i dont think it is metal, and i dont think you could see it either if it blew out, there pretty small in size.

Yes, when the bricks inside my old Carsound broke apart I had rattling at only a certain RPM. The RPM it would rattle at would change a little depending on the temp.
I think the Type R's stock fuel map is just too rich for Carsounds and destroys them without tuning. When I had my baseline dyno done I was running stupid rich in VTEC, fuel had to be leaned out a good amount from 6000-8400 RPM.

metal shavings? could it be from ur exaust? i used to see small bits of rusted metal here and there when i took off my silencer (apexi n1)...
I've had my carsound cat for a good 2-3 months and it rattles inside as well. It is kind of annoying, but I really dont want to buy another cat.

I've had my Carsound cat from IPS I think is where Dave (R&D) got em'.. 6 months, no rattle, no stench.. They put the extra welds on the heat shield to keep them nice and together..

the silver coating from the donut gasket flaked off into my cat, I'm pretty sure that it is not the things causing the rattling though.Hmmmm
If it's the same problem I had w/ mine, the cat is toast. The brick will rattle until it breaks into pieces, which just kick around and rattle even louder. Then you will start getting check engine lights. Seems to be a very common problem. I am much less than thrilled about carsound, but I still have a new one, and w/ a little luck, it will actually last.
Same thing happened to my CATCO 2.5 highflow. For now Im just running my testpipe
until I decide if I wanna buy another cat or just wait until I have money to spare.

when i melted mine it mostly rattled in the lower rpms too or when i let off the throttle
get it checked out, coz the dislodged honeycombe like structure inside can completly bloke flow causing possible serious damage
