brake recomendations needed
i think my rotors are warped cause i can hear them squeal even when i'm not stepping on the brake so i think its time for a complete brake job. what i wanna know is, should invest in some powerslotted disc brakes? i have a 90 civic si. should i get the 90 civic ex brakes that are a little bigger than mines? does it just bolt on with no problems? also, what kind of brake pads should i buy? ebc greens? or just go stock? i don't have a +300 hp motor so no, i don't need to go all out, i'd just like a simple upgrade i can do quickly...
I don't have time to post much, but here goes...
Everyone recommends buying Brembo OE slotted rotors or even just Brembo blanks. Don't go with stock discs again because they don't have a reputation for lasting long. Powerslots don't have the best rep either.
I don't know about switching the brakes for a '90 EX... can't help you there. As for the pads, Hawk makes the best pads - get the HPS (preferred) or HP+ (for street + autocross, a little more extreme and dusty than the HPS's). Don't get Hawk Blues; the brake dust eats through your paint
.
I'd recommend changing your fluid, too... that's what gives you pedal 'feel' for the most part... HTH!

I think the 90-91 CRX Si brakes will bolt right up. Bigger caliper and rotors. Carbotech makes a pad called Panther Plus. Stop as good as Hawk blue, but no rotor wear and no paint eating dust. Great for daily driving also.

You might want to check your sources. I own both a 90 CRX Si and a 90 Civic Si. Trust me, the brakes are not the same. The CRX uses different pads and rotors. Comparing the two, the CRX rotors are bigger

Your Brakes are warped when you step on the brakes and the car starts to shake a lot... If its just squealing than like everyone else said its just brake dust in between the pad and the brakes... But if you still want to go with better disc brakes than I would recommended you to get Brembo O.E. Replacement, like what raeneshadow said, they are very good brakes and they are not a huge hole digger in your pockets like the factory stuff. Best place to find the Brembo's is E-bay... Everyone is selling those on E-bay everyday... Slotted, Cross Drilled, and even both. You can get them under $100 for both front or rear. In re-gards to brake pads, honda factory pads are good because they get their pads from NISSIN, which also makes pads for AEM and factory on the Famous Nissan Skylines.
O-man I can tell you right now that the diameter of 89-91 civic/crx si,dx brakes are the same. There is a difference in rotor thickness though which is why there are different pads. The 90-91 civic EX 4door brakes are indeed bigger. If you get the complete spindle ,rotor, caliper, everything bolts up.
oh. ok. well my rotors are warped....they've been warped for a while now because my steering wheel does shake when i brake hard. and even if they weren't, i'd still wanna get new rotors. so now the question is...OE? slotted? or crossdrilled?? i've heard some people say that crossdrilled rotors can fail on you some how under too much stress? and i've also heard that slotted rotors can kill your brake pads? again, i'm not going to autocross or drag race with an all powerful motor, but i want improved brake performance. as you all can see, i know nothing about aftermarket brakes.
If I were you I would buy some good quality non-drilled/sloted rotors ,a high performance brake pad like a Hawk Black pad, steel braided lines, and some performance brake fliud like Ford HD fluid or Motul. Your car will stop awsome.
It's the pad that makes your car stop better not holes in the rotors. If you get any fade on the street with the above set up, somthing is wrong with your master cylinder or your foot.
Slots are good but I don't think you need them on the street.
With the exception of the pad alot of 88-91 civic/crx race cars use this setup on the track. (track cars will use a more agressive pad like a hawk blue)

Unless my eyesight, and the Raybestos book I have here at the shop are both wrong, the CRX Si rotors are marginally bigger. You are very correct about the EX's; about 3/4inch bigger
