The order of modifications and/or repairs
Alright guys/girls. I have been thinking on this for a while now (5 minutes), and I have come to a conclusion. That conclusion is - "I will not take my own advice so therefore I will go to the pro's at http://www.Honda-Tech.com.
This is what i'm asking. I really would like to beef the ol' beater up. I have a 1990 Honda Accord EX. Yes, it's a 4-door and heavy as hell, but I would still like to see what I can do with it. Also, seeing as though I will not be able to get another car for a while now, I might as well play with this one...right?
There are many cosmetic damages to my car including some nice sized dents and gashes. Not to mention the hellish paint fadeing going on. I also just recently got into a minor collision so now my bumper is a little twaeked to say the least. The interior is ok, but could use a minor face lift.
My engine... ha ha ha, my engine. Well, it's still runing. I have 145,xxx miles on it, but as always there is something wrong. When I pass the 2,500-3,000 rpm mark, I get the rattling sound. Now, this is only when I am driveing. When I put the car in neutral I can rev the car up to the limit and hear no noise. Could this be the tranny? Or something in the engine that stresses only when there is a load on it? I would like to get the h22 swap, but as we all know that cost's money, alot of it. So for now, I would like to just have my current engine run beautifully...if at all possible. As soon as I figure out what that rattleing sound is and fix hat I would like to build my engine up and make it slightly more powerful, if you know what I mean, and I know you do. Could you guys possibly tell me what I can do to my current engine to first bring it back from the gutter and onto the street, and then to mod it? Thanks.
Also, what would you all recomend me doing first? Cosmetic (outside) or engine?
Sorry for writing so much. This is all just bugging the crap outta me.
Thank you all!

do nothing, and just drive it. the more you mod your car, the more youll have to work on it to fix it. i will no longer modify any car because if it was meant to be modified, the manufacturer would hav already dont it. hehe
Thank you for your replys, well with the exception of vtecISscreaminLIKEyoMOMMA, thank you for keeping this serious.
What about the repairs? Does anybody have the slightest clue as to what the rattleing sound it?
Again, thank you.

rattling is the heatshield around your catalytic converter. You can either remove it completly or fasten it with some hose clamps.

honestly though, fourth gens are so fun to mod. theyre ALWAYS sleeping....i say take each one at a time. like spend a full weekend on tuneup. and the next on installing your LED nozzle lights or whatever floats your boat. modding is like smoking....it should be done in moderation

Again, thank you all for your replys. And the weed thing is convered...no worries.
Like I said in my orignial post, I would like to take some time and just build the engine up. Maybe not totally, but just replace a few vital things here and there.
Now, I know you guys don't want me to do anything except to smoke weed, but if I could change your minds, what would be the first thing you would repair/replace on this old f22?
Thanks!

i'd be replacing everything old, worn, broken, or leaking. check service schedules to find what should be replaced at what mileage before it does go out. it gets $$ but hey i've never been left on the side of the road since i bought this thing.
you should replace the air in the gas tank when it get low/empty with gas so you can drive to your local drug dealer and spend all your money on weed.
Yep keeping stock coz alot of mile..may i ask are you going to
get another car with 5 years? start think now.
I smoke alot of weed to ..I smoke two before i drive, I smoke when I
drive and two more after I drive and I smoke two more before
i Smoke at all..(is on the radio.funny as hell)

I would just roll up a 5 sheeter and get an intake off of Ebay. You will get a few HP, and it'll sound good. And remember, just cause you're paranoid doesn't mean the cops aren't after you.
personally, i would keep it as beater but thats p to you
if i had a 4th gen as a beater i would do the following:
clean it up first, fix all dings dents
yank the motor and rebuild it
i would say just for durability sake use ss valves but other than that keep internals close to stock unless there are better oem replacement parts out there like get a real all metal radiator to replace that 1/2 plastic, 1/2 aluminum stock trash
motor mount inserts
h23 upper plenum and tb
relocate battery to trunk to accomidate a real cai
slight suspension tweaking with some better rubber perhaps some wider 15" wheels (could be some steelies to keep the dl effect)
pspec/4bidden shortshifter is nice
and like a stage II cm kevlar clutch for longevity purposes
header with 2.5" collector, cat on back to a stock looking muffler, no tip sprayed black
and a nice system to keep them 420 sessions interesting
otherwise
id drop an h22 in there and do some basic boltons perhjaps more depending on how far you want to go

I wouldn't do anything except take the dents out if they're REALLY bad. Use some kind of paintless ding removal for that at about 1/3 the price of regular bodywork. Also, since the paint is gone to hell and a decent paint job is at least $1000-3000 bucks, I would spend ZERO on mods. Especially since Florida is full of low-priced used cars that are probably in much better condition than yours. You could probably buy a nicer used car with the money you might spend on mods/paint.
While your car is a beater...it is a reliable beater. Treat is as one and don't mod it...
