Re: Share Your Biggest Car Problem and Win an Innova 5610!
My biggest car problem, currently, has been finding aftermarket cv axles with splines that fit my OEM hubs anywhere close to the fit of the OEM cv splines. Given it's for my 1993 Civic LX put-put car, and not a swapped for something sexy under the hood race car, Raxles and the Drive line shop couldn't help me, though both companies couldn't have been nicer. Shout out to Marty at Raxles - that's a good dude.
I posted my problem here but it's a subjective fitment issue that's hard to assess online. Thanks to all who responded. So, after trying fitment with 5 aftermarket brands (yes, I toted my hubs into to NAPA, O'Reilly and Advance auto and ordered GSP and TRQ online) I found that all the Chinese manufacturers have achieved remarkable consistency - and by that I mean, just a bit off so that the OEM hub can be rotated on the aftermarket cv splines just enough to hear a few disappointing click.
At wit's end, I remembered speaking to a good dude named Eddie at shop recommended to me awhile ago and I bought a dozen donuts (it just happened to be national donut day) and took my GSP aftermarket axle ( it fit the least worst by a hair) and OEM hub into the shop hoping to trade sustenance for his opinion on fit. Specifically, I wanted to know if these guys would trust the somewhat playful fit IF they were installing on a customer's car. Given that OEMs are not available, and the car does less than 5k a year, he (and another mechanic nice enough to weigh-in) said they would install it if it was them - though they did agree with the fitment not being ideal.
So not a sexy fix, but a real one for someone trying to do their own work. I'm just to keep a classic on the road with HondaTech - and donuts - as essential tools in this, at times, quixotic endeavor.
