Default Project: High mpg / reliable rd1 2000 Crv

Hello,

170k 2000 1st gen rd1 Crv

I am a college student looking to keep my crv running for as long as possible. I do all the work on it myself. So far it has a new distributor, plug wires, plugs, starter, water pump, valve cover and oil pan gasket, cleaned iac valve, new intake filter, some new ball joints, deleted muffler, new timing belt, cleaned injectors, new pcv, and new struts.

I do an oil filter change every 2-3k miles, it burns about a quart every 1k so I’ll use the leftover of a 5qt to keep it topped up. I use the Walmart brand 5w-30 high mile and the oem filter from Walmart.

I did the valve lash adjustment within 10k, along with new trans and diff fluid (don’t need the diff fluid lol).

The driveshaft carrier bearing blew up on a long road trip and is still off.

Id like to repair the car in sections, but up to a point where I can easily rely on it for 250 mile trips each weekend to the mountains and to my girlfriends. Along with the reliability, I would like to make it as fuel efficient as possible to help save money on the trips.

Right now it is sputtering at idle, I can bring the rpms back up by pressing on the break hard, but I’m afraid it is getting worse. Cleaning the injectors helped, but I’m suspecting the fuel pump or filter may be going bad (the fuel indicator will rise and fall very slowly).

I would really appreciate any recommendations or suggestions for a systematic approach (or list) to rebuilding the vehicle within a few months for under $2k ish parts. *with the goal of keeping the car reliable and as fuel efficient as possible. I would like for the parts that may go bad within the next 50k to be replaced; an unknown ask! But hopefully an intensive list.

My plan so far is to replace the fuel filter, clean the 02 sensors (or replace if it’s worth it), remove the rear diff and rear cv axles, possibly new cat as it rattles very bad, install a mpg display off the obd2, time the engine, and make a list of rubber suspension parts to replace.

thank you! I appreciate all the advice

Do not remove your rear axles. The axle nut that goes through the hub along with the end of the axle hold everything together.
