Default Easiest way to tell the timing belt is bad

What's the how to tell if the timing belt is broken on a 2000 Honda CR-V?

Grandson's car, no start

How much damage can be done by them continuing to attempt to start?

Engine spins freely on the starter. No resistance.

If the belt is broken the damage is already done. Any valves that were still open are now closed by the pistons and will be damaged.
