Freeze plug on head missing after machine shop. Will JB weld hold??
I fully rebuilt my daily driver. D17a engine from a 2004 civic EX. Block decked and honed. Head resurfaced at machine shop. New bearings piston rings, valve guides valve seals etc etc. I did the rings and bearings at home.
first “machine shop” did the worst job ever but turn around time was like a week. I then had to take it to the machine shop I usually use to correct the issues and spent money twice there. Frustrating I know. Now I realized when putting together that I was missing an oil orifice tube and a plug on the side of the head. First machine shop didn’t give me those back.
i tried taking it off another engine and stripped the Allen key hole so I ended up just putting a fitting that was close enough in size and putting JB weld. Do you guys think JB weld will hold? It’s rated at 500 degrees and coolant only gets to around low 200 if I’m not mistaken? You can see the hole in this one. Slathered JB weld…
Re: Freeze plug on head missing after machine shop. Will JB weld hold??
No, get the correct plug. You aren’t worried about temp in this situation, you’re worried about pressure. JB weld will not seal well enough and the pressure will cause the oil to leak through, or just pop the plug out.
Pressure is like water, it always finds the path of least resistance.
Re: Freeze plug on head missing after machine shop. Will JB weld hold??
I would’ve thought it was a threaded plug but it was smooth. So strange. Did not find any for sale online. I don’t even know why the first place I took it to would take it off. I tried taking it off another head and I stripped the bolt because it wouldn’t budge. I’m so frustrated with the first place I took it to. I have already put it together and going in the car. Maybe I’ll make a trip to the junkyard today later on but now I’m afraid if I’ll be able to break the one I put in there with the JB weld on it… fml
