Default V-TEC miseries

Hi folks, nubie here having severe trouble with my 2006 Honda CR-V AWD with 230,000 miles on it. I think that my problem is somehow connected to the V-TEC. Here’s what’s going on. The car “bucked” ans “stuttered” horribly and the engine light came on. Using my BlueDriver I found 3 codes: a bad #1 coil (P0301), VTEC advance malfunction (P1009), or knock sensor (P0325). So, all the coils got replaced along with the knock sensor. Didn’t help, so I replaced the V-TEC. Still didn’t help! Before I replaced the V-TEC, the car still threw the same codes but would run better the warmer it got – that doesn’t seem to be happening with the new V-TEC (genuine Honda). If I put the car in neutral, it idles and revs up fine; however, shifting into gear and I’m lucky to get it in the garage it stutters so bad. The oil & filter got changed also. The V-TEC filter in the replaced V-TEC did not appear to be clogged. And, should it possibly matter, I recently changed the transmission oil also. So, does anyone have any ideas as to what the heck is going on here?

Also, if anyone out there understands how the V-TEC functions, I’m all ears.

thanks in advance

I thought P1009 was a VTC code rather than a VTEC code.

Ok, just looked up VTC and it's the "V-TEC" solenoid that I replaced. Brand new Honda part.

VTC is not VTEC

VTC is the variable timing control feature on the intake cam. It's controlled by the VTC solenoid located in the side of the head just above the motor mount on the timing cover.

VTEC spool valve and solenoid are on the back side of the cylinder head and controls the VTEC rocker arms that act on the larger cab lobes.

Both systems are fed oil through a screen on the front of the head under the power steering pump. This screen is known to become plugged and cause issues. The screen has a rubber gasket cast to it. Best to just replace the screen assembly rather than trying to clean it.

There’s another screen by the power steering pump right behind the motor mount on the passenger side. It’s about $8 bucks on Amazon. Element Lifestyle has a Youtube video on it.

Did you change the screen by the power steering pump?

@bluehead123 I guess I’m still confused as to whether you’ve changed the VTC oil control solenoid or if you’ve changed the VTEC spool assembly (which includes the VTEC solenoid and VTEC oil pressure switch). The VTC has a separate screen from the solenoid, while the VTEC screen is part of the gasket of the spool assembly.

Hello. I had similar codes on my 2006 CRV. The screen next to the power steering pump needed changing. I also had to change the valve solenoid in between timing chain. After removing it, one of the screens was dislodge. I ended changing the VTEC, VVT and screen located above PS pump. Fixed the codes. Hope this helps.

This correct. Ex Honda mechanic. Majority of these codes are caused by the lower screen and VTC solenoid. We would replace the VTEC solenoid, VTC solenoid, and change the lower screen. Mostly on vehicles with over 100k. In fact this reminds me that I need to replace these soon as I'm at 127k. But synthetic and high milage synthetic have been used when my parents owned. They were 2nd owners and it had 38k on it when they bought it. I think I'm ok for now.
