problem with VTEC
ok here's the deal, the VTEC on my GSR kicks in at different RPMs sometimes 4000 sometimes 4500 sometimes 5000 and once it kicks in, it turns on and off like there's a lag.... does anyone experienced this before??? Im suspecting its the VTEC filter or the solenoid... any input would be appreciated
TIA

Any check engine lights? It's probably just your oil pressure is low. Might want to take off your distributor cap and make sure the wires on the coil aren't loose. Good luck
BTW it's a vtec solenoid, not a filter.

no engine lights.... actually I had a problem with the VTEC on my EJ8 b4... the engine light came on and VTEC won't kick in... so I brought it to a mechanic and he told me to pickup a filter I think it's called VTEC filter and got it straight from honda for like less than 10 bucks not the solenoid and it fixed the problem... but right now, there's no engine light and VTEC still kicks in but it lags and if the oil pressure is low wouldn't the oil light on my dash will come on?? and if the wires on the coil are loose, wouldn't it affect the whole acceleration not just the VTEC???
Well I too have never heard of a VTEC filter and I am an acura technichian.
1)Did you check your oil level, cause the ECU will disengage Vtec when oil pressure drops. Or your solenoid could be bad. you could do an Omh's test. it should read 14-30 Omhs at the 1p connector.
2) Do you know if your Secondaries are kicking in. That might be something to look into also. if there is a short in that solenoid on your IAB vacuum tank on the under side of your intake.

haha, well I guess that's not the name but its that little gasket looking thing with a screen that goes between the solenoid assembly and the head....
well I'm really a noob when it comes to this stuff... so ur saying it could be the VTEC solenoid or the solenoid on the IAB vacuum tank?? and what "Secondaries"??
well my oil change is due in like 200 kms and I cannot get an accurate reading when a check my oil level lmao... but I'm getting a change oil 2mrw and see what happens... but could the oil be the problem??

Yeah there is a metal mesh screen on the VTEC sol housing. On a ITR or LS you have intake runners that connect to the pleneum. Now the lenghts are differnet on the two. the ITR has shorter ones and the LS have longer ones. that is due to where they make there power and has an effect on fuel eco. Now Honda had to make the GSR diff. there is a plate that houses a second set of valves almost like tiny throttle bodies. they are operated off of vacuum and the ecu. its a fuel saver at low rpm cause the air follows the longer set of runners, but at a certain throttle pos and rpm the secondaries open up and give the air a more direct path to the combus camber, acting like the ITR intake given it a boost of power.
But yes there is a sensor on the back of the block that sense oil levels, if the ECU detects low oil levels then it will disengage VTEC, saving the engine. So when you get on it and vtec hits the solenoid opens and directs oil to lock the valve train in high lift therefore taking more oil away from what is available when not in vtec. That more than likely will be your problem. I have only seen one vtec solenoid go bad. Of course this is with out me seeing or driving the car. if not take it to an import specialty shop or dealership.
