I have a 98 Honda Civic with a stock radio that I purchased an aftermarket key fob for, but I am not able to get it to work properly. The dome light also doesn't work. After doing some reading it sounds like most people with this issue have an aftermarket stereo, I do not. I am able to push the valet button and get the fob to connect, but as soon as the valet button is released the fob no longer connects. I'm wondering if I have a bad wire or fuse, and if so, how would I test that? I have very little experience with this type of thing. There are three connectors, one gray and two green. One of the green ones doesn't connect to anything that I can see. I tried the paper clip trick, but it didn't work. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!
Re: 98 Civic Keyless Entry and Dome Light Not Working
I'll see if I can help. I have the OEM keyless and the Honda optional security system on my 97 LX.
Firstly, the third green plug is for the Honda optional security system. The control unit for that sits in the open gap there on top of the radio.
In looking through the factory manual, there are a few notes about the keyless system. One states "After replacing the transmitter battery, press the lock and unlock buttons five or six times to activate the transmitter." I don't recall having to do that, but it's been years since I installed all new OEM stuff in favor of the crappy aftermarket unit from the previous owner, but maybe I did. Might try this.
Does the dome light work at all? Need to be in the middle position to work with the keyless system.
Make sure the key is NOT in the ignition. Keyless will not work if it is.
Do the power door locks work manually, by pressing the lock/unlock button on the door?
