30 LX ECU into a 03 EX... Temporary... will it hurt the car, ECU or throw codes
Oops... if a mod can fix the title to 03 LX, not 30.
I have searched, but I'm not finding this particular situation.
Basic premise. 2003 EX manual vtec coupe (D17A2) is coding for EGR... all other emissions codes clear. Car has to pass emissions this week or I am in violation. My totaled previous car I still have is a 2003 LX manual non-vtec coupe , non-EGR car (D17A1).
No the EGR code can not be fixed in time... read history below.
So in the middle of the night I woke up with an idea. Since my only issue is the EGR... and the LX did not have one... what if I swap ECUs? I know the vtec will not work. But the LX ecu does not care and will not code for that? It should also assume the car does not have EGR, so it will not check codes for the EGR? So in theory will this work? Will the car code for anything? Yes it will run like poo, but I just need it to not code for emissions related items and make it thru the readiness cycle. I want to be sure I will not hurt the car or any sensors. As soon as I pass emissions I will swap the ECU back and hopefully the other car will be out of the shop. ANd the EX can get repaired properly. also the EX has abs and traction control, but LX did not. I can drive thru the readiness without those But that is not really a code thing for emissions. I just don't want to do any damage to the car or the LX ecu. What about the ignition Key is that coded to the ECU or something in the column?
I know folks discuss the opposite and the EX ecu will hunt and code for the missing vtec, but what about the opposite?
I had done similar to trouble shoot my 93 DelSol to verify if I had a dead ECU or fuel system, but that is obviously not the more involved OBD2 system.
HISTORY:
if it matters... I will try to keep the back story brief, but I mention in case its relevant to my idea...
Basically I owned a 2003 LX coupe manual that was totaled. I retained the car for parts and bought a 2003 EX coupe manual. Only issue was on the way home from buying the EX the head blew out. Limped it & got it to pass emissions Long story... but lets say someone (not me) used leak stop improperly and messed the car up. It happened during Covid, so the car was parked. Finally when I knew my job was secure, I had the mechanic go thru it and fix. However, the tag was about to expire, so it had to pass emissions. Anyway, car had no codes before the repair. While the car was apart, I had the mechanic clean out the carbon track as the EX has EGR, which my LX did not. He cleaned it all. I get the car home and drove it thru the drive cycle to get it to pass emissions. Code for the EGR flashes up. I reset and it comes back. I take EGR off and clean. Still the code comes back. Knowing the intake manifold track was cleaned, I think the only thing it can be is the EGR. I replace it. Code comes back. reset.. code comes back. Drive the car... code still stays on. Mind you I have to pass emissions to legally drive it. In the meantime mechanic gets sick and tag expires. I had my other car to drive, so I was not panicked. We basically assume it is the wrong intake gasket that was installed, blocking the EGR ports in the head. So mechanic knows its warranty and he has to open the engine again. I wait for him to get caught up on work after being sick
Then the other car goes down. So I have a car to drive, I intentionally fail emissions on the EX and the county gives me a 30 waiver to drive the car. Mechanic works on the other car. Now supply issues have the other cars repair to be on hold. I have no choice but to continue to drive the EX, I have 4 days left and my waiver expires.
