Default final drive opinion

I've been doing alot of reading about final drives. Last year i was running a gsr engine with a 4.92 final in a b16 transmission. Very fun in town and total crap on highway.

This year ive gone turbo, 303 Whp, same transmission. its mental fun and still just ton crap on highway. i also feel like, maybe im not getting the full potential of the turbo with this short gearing, despite acceleration being nuts fun.

Would moving to a 4.0 final in b16, gsr, or ls trans be a better idea for the turbo potential and a mix of highway driving? ive only ever felt the 4.92, so its hard to say and need some opinions ( ek hatch)

Stop going so extreme from 4.9 to 4.0. The LS alone is a 4.29.. just use a standard 4.4 Final drive and call it day.

I've never been a fan of a 4.9, not even for all motor. You are 300hp and boosted and the car sees the highway, I'd do LS or GSR trans if you can find one.

I actually have both, I'm just not sure which to use, I have an m factory 4.0 final, I was debating swapping in to one. I just don't know the reality of the results for either or.

I had an ls 5th at one point, but...I hated it.
Just don't know how the character of the car will change with a 4.0 in a gsr or ls. I've been looking at calculators, trying to find videos. Really needing some people thoughts/opinions versus my somewhat biased opinion

As I wondered ls or GSR 4.0 final. Compared to a b16 4.0 tight gears but long final so I'm always high in the powerband, BUT still decent for highway cruising..? Where is the balance for the power output and highway practicality

:/

4.0 in a GSR overall ratios are damn near a 100% stock 4.26 LS, so there is no point building that. If you like that gearing I'd just bolt in the LS, but from the sounds of it I think you'll prefer the stock GSR. If you want to rev out quicker turn up the boost.

GSR uses a 4.4 final drive

I have a B16 transmission with the 4.9 final drive and am considering using it in the future.
I’ve never used it, just wondering if it’s “total crap” on the highway because your cruising RPM for 5th gear is too high of an RPM. So for example if you’re at 70MPH, then it’s at a really high RPM?
And is acceleration with 300whp good with that transmission or do you find yourself shifting too often?

High numerical gearing is never fun on the highway

id go with the GSR trans.. the LS is too long and b16 is too short, especially with that 4.9 fd. i have an LS trans with a GSR 3rd and 4th gear, its perfect for 500hp. but lets say you want to put the 4.0 FD in the b16. the gear seperation will be the same so it will still have good gear ratios but it will move it up in the capable mph and give it a longer feel.. ish.
