Tool Needed to Write VINs to ECUs
Hey guys,
When replacing an ECU (2001-2005 Civic), what is needed to write the vehicle's VIN to the new ECU? I assume it would be some type of scan tool which connects via the OBD-II port, but I know so little about this that I'm having trouble knowing what to look for. Aside from writing the VIN, is there anything else that needs to be done? The goal is to have the car run normally without an engine light or an immobilizer light flashing.
I realize a dealer could probably do this, but I want to know what I could use to do it at home. I'm hoping for a somewhat cost-effective solution.
I also know you can sometimes use soldering and desoldering equipment to move immobilizer chips between two boards, but that's not what I'm looking to do either.
Thanks

Ok, does anyone know what this tool is and where I could buy one?
I know with a basic scan tool, you can read the VIN that is presently stored in the car's computer. Doesn't this VIN need to be changed?
Is there a protocol for these tools? Are the tools specific to vehicle make, like Honda?

Autel is one example of an HDS clone capable of programming immobilizer systems. There are cheaper examples but I can't speak to them. They are not typically limited to just the Honda market.
On something that early I don't think the VIN can be changed once it is set. One time burn as far as I know.
