I have a 2002 Honda Civic LX with a water leak where only the driver's side floor has been getting wet. I found where the leak was coming from; it was cracked caulk near the bottom corner of the windshield under the driver's side front quarter panel, which I guess is relatively common for these models.
Area where leak was located (with old caulk removed)
I scraped all the old caulk off and got some silicon metal caulk (100% waterproof) to replace it with which seems like it will work great! I'm hoping to never have to do this again, so I was planning on applying a thin bead of caulk around the gasket in the firewall where the hood release cable comes through (underneath the driver's front quarter panel), just be safe. I noticed a plastic plus directly above where the hood release cable gasket is located, pressed on it, and it was loose enough to press out (I pressed it back flush against the metal by pushing from inside the car).
I'm pointing at the plastic plug
Does anyone know what the purposed of this plastic plug is? I can't tell what function it is supposed to serve, and it seems like I should probably caulk around the plug as well so that no water can get in through that hole.
