5th Gen Prelude auto transmission swap into 97 Accord
Hello everyone!
(Lead up and back story)
I bought a 1997 Honda Accord 4 Door LX last Sunday and the transmission is slipping and not shifting up gears, I drove the car 3 hours straight and when got back in town I noticed the transmission was revving up when it would go to shift up from 2 > 3 & 3 >4. You had to let off the gas so it would shift into the gear I believe that is called slow shifting ? Either way now it has gotten worse to the point you can only go about 20 - 40 and it stays in second gear. This may be unrelated and a coincidence but the speedometer didn't work and the only code shown was P0501 Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/Performance (due to the bad VSS) so I installed a new VSS and it began working and the code went away but I started getting the codes P0401(Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected) & P0715 (Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit) this is very odd as nothing has changed but the new VSS... could it be the wrong one or defective and it is causing these transmission issue to have gotten worse ?
I am just going to assume that the transmission has failed basically. The car has every service record and whatnot in the glove box, it was taken to the dealership at her scheduled dates and mileage and met all appointments on time up until at least 2004 as thats when the paper trail stops that I have access to in the glove box. The transmission fluid is full and nice bright red like it should with no visible metal or foreign contaminates visible. Could a shift solenoid or other type of solenoid be causing these transmission troubles ?? If unlikely, I have a backup plan at hand.
(Question at hand)
I have a 1998 Honda Prelude Automatic track car build that I had swapped the transmission with the JDM counterpart (M6HA) sitting here. The transmission has a bent pawl and reverse doesn't work and only makes a horrid grinding noise, it drinks transmission fluid lol it spews it out somewhere I never could find while driving and it would slip I am assuming because it was losing all the transmission fluid out somewhere but I believe it probably has worn bands and wouldn't grab well anyways with it being run low/dry so much and the heat stresses caused by that aswell. Either way I plan to rebuild it or have it rebuilt.
What I am unsure of as I have no experience in transmission swaps or rebuilds.
Firstly; My goal is to swap in the Prelude transmission into the Accord. *I have found some information that hints at this being possible but I would like more information and a definite answer from more knowledgeable people than I am.
Secondly; If the transmission will bolt up, swap in correctly, and work will the slap stick function still also work in the Accord? Would I need to swap the TCU with a Prelude TCU (if possible and if the Accord even has a TCU on this year model)
Thirdly; If the transmission swap will bolt up and will work correctly, where can I find a rebuild kit for the USDM Prelude transmission that is preferable from a reputable source with good high quality components incase I do a few upgrades to my Accords F22B2, its supposed to be my daily driver but you never know lol
Extras, can someone please inform me of the gearing ratios of the Prelude transmission vs. the Accord transmission (both Automatics) I am curious what the RPM differences are going to be. I read it will be a little higher due the the prelude transmission was geared for the H22 high revs, as the F22 is a lower revving economy based engine.
Thank you very much friends for the read, your input, the information, everything, and your time. 🙏❤💯
Sincerely with much love, tht_prelude_guy

I have a JDM mp1a 92-96 prelude transmission in my 94 accord. I’m using my original TCU with it. It has slightly shorter gear ratios for better acceleration at the cost of higher rpms at highway cruising speed, but not much. At 80 mph I’m at like 3k rpms. That’s all I can tell you. Hope it helps.
