Transmission swap on 87 accord - DIY job or not?

Transmission swap on 87 accord - DIY job or not?
Here's the scenario.
87 accord LX, 2.0L auto, carb, 3 speed.
The car starts fine and goes into gear but after when I let off the gas to start slowing down I get this loud whine or Zzzzzzzz sound coming from the transmission and I can't accelerate anymore. If I apply the brakes or slow down to say 20 I can then start to drive it again. I took it to a mechanic and he said the transmission needs to be replaced (as fixing it would be even more) so with the estimate of $500 to $700 dollars being a little steep for this old girl I'm now questioning whether a novice can swap out a tranny on this model.
I have some DIY experience, mostly starters, alternators doing brakes and one time I had a guy help me rebuild my mazda 626 engine after it blew the head gasket but I don't know if that qualifies me to try and R&R a tranny.
I thought I'd try and gather some information and then decide based on what I found and feedback whether it sounded like a job I could tackle or not.
So anybody got any pointers for me? What do I need to know? Compatible models would be ??? I saw a post about 'any transmission off of a 90-93 accord or a 90-91 prelude' but that was for an LXi HB which I have to admit I don't know what that is.

Its a simple job and would take a decent diyer anywhere form 3-8 hours. Dont know if you meant to type it but it should be a 5spd since its a manual correct? Really the only compatible trannies are the 86-89 Honda Accords, also 85-87 prelude trannies should work as well. Now you can make a hybrid tranny using prelude accord and teg gears, but im not gonna get into that just check out the 3geez forum.

thread about the prelude tranny.
Also check out http://www.3geez.com if you havent already has just about everything you need to know about the 3rd gen accord.

Yeah, if you have metric tools, flat concrete, jack stands, and a jack with a friend to run it, you can do it. But I'd put the job more like 3 weekends of your spare time based on your experience level.
