Default Where are my engines Ted?!

So I don’t know if anyone else has noticed but B series motors have been impossible to find recently. Is Covid to blame or are they simply just getting out of stock? So I was browsing the Interwebs and I found Jegs has a bunch of remanufactured crate engines by ATK and I was curious is anyone has heard of these and any reviews?

There are a few B18c's on ebay for $8k plus. There is also a GSR for around $3500 which is probably 25% above market. It's likely a combination of Japan being all but shut down for the last 18 months and diminishing supply. The ATK remans are interesting but require a core. FOr that price, I'd rather send my motor to a pro builder like Laskey, King, or someone who specializes in Honda rebuilds.

yeah I figured Japan being shutdown definitely had something to do with it as well as the diminishing supply. So this may seem like a stupid question but when you say the ATK remans need a core what do you mean? Do they not come with internals?

When a core is required it means they need your old engine along with the cost of the rebuild. They may or may not be rebuilding your exact engine, but they do want a long block along with the $3k cost.

Have been watching this trend for months. I believe supplies have diminished and we are going to have to get used to higher prices.

The newest B-series engine to go in a car is now 20 years old, and so many tens of thousands of them have been swapped, crashed, destroyed, stripped for parts over the years. Doesn't really seem like this should come as much of a surprise at this point.

Helped along by the fact the doner cars (ITRs especially) are increasing in value so they are less likely to get parted out. Which is good.

Both of this, unfortunately. I don't see the market for this (or a lot of other things that are in high demand, short supply) ever really recovering. This shortage of computer parts, lumber, steel, etc is going to last for a very long time.

K is seriously the way go now. K24A2 fully dressed are selling for $900-$1000 pretty regularly now.

Even unmolested K20s are becoming difficult as people strip the heads to put on to K24 blocks

But no chance of being legal in places like CA so not an alternative for some of us.

Ah I see now, I was just being stupid and didn’t see the fine print, yeah I figured it was too good to be true that a remanufactured long block was 3k. It’s crazy back 10 years ago how expensive k swaps were and now they are so cheap! Looks like that’s the way I go unless I can find a em1 here soon, maybe it’s just me but I just prefer the sound of a B to a K🤷‍♂️ Thanks for all the answers guys

B for sure sounds better but the K makes power in a way the B never could. And like already stated, 20 years newer and just recently ended production.

Honestly from what I’m seeing it looks like LS/V is gonna be the way to go if you wanna stay with a B and not spend a fortune. I’m in the process of making my Sedan just a super clean daily and I have turbo plans for the Dingle cam I’m taking out of it. I really wanna do an all motor K build in the future but I just recently re-discovered my love for Honda’s after ten years and damnit I want dat OG B V-TEC crossover yo! I’ll be starting a build thread here soon!

You and me both. I'm midway through rebuilding my LS/V and I can't wait to rip V-TEC hard!

I have a low mile B18C5 crate DOT stamped short block with same mile crate B18C5/R cylinder head along with a matching B18C5 crate DOT stamped LSD trans id part away with for the right price! you cant find these anymore! I paid something like $3,500 for the long block, $1,600 for the bare head, $2,500 for the trans back when i assembled this setup. Everything came brand new with 0 miles in the Honda Box
