Can I use an OBD2 EK ecu on an OBD1 wiring harness and engine?
Car is an eg Civic with a D15B JDM VTEC and automatic transmission. Wiring harness is all original. I'm currently running it on a P28 that works fine. The thing is that I like to carry some basic tools and extra parts with me, since it's an old car. I currently carry a backup ignition coil, igniter, dizzy magnetic pickup, fuel pump, map sensor, and a couple other small parts. I want to carry a backup ecu as well, especially since it's an A/T. Working OBD1 ECUs are hard to find these days for less than $120. Meanwhile, EK ecus are a dime a dozen since they can't be chipped. I know people use chipped OBD1 ecus in ODB2 Civics all the time, but can I use an EK ecu as a backup for my car and have it run the engine and trans. properly? I don't care if the ecu is vtec, since it would only be used as a backup to keep me going.
Not really, at least not happily.
I'm not really sure what differs between the 5th gen and 6th gen trans controls, maybe nothing at all.
As far as the OBD1-->OBD2 'upgrade', if you are savvy with electronics you can make a couple of circuits that will make the ecu think it still has all of its extra OBD2 emissions controls on it. Will it be worth the effort? Highly not likely.
Sorry to be a party pooper :D

A quality adapter harness just so you could plug it in to the stock EG ECU wiring will cost you MORE than a $120 OBD-1 ECU. Just find one of those and all will be good for you... in a back-up sense.
