Troubleshooting: '04 2.4Litre - Sudden rough idle and stalling on throttle
'04 EX - 2.4 ATx - stalls & stumbles, sometimes dies whenever pressing on accelerator pedal both in neutral & when in gear on road; problem first occurred about 2 weeks ago on highway every time accelerator was pushed ; roadside inspection revealed the "cannister" device (picture) had come out of the intake bellows after an air filter change - pushed it back in & the car ran fine
need to update the symptoms - car starts runs fine on cold engine, problem only occurs after fully warmed up
can't find this "cannister" in my Accord shop manual - on inspection it seems to be just a "can" since i can blow thru it; it is simply open to atmosphere via the intake bellows and the upper side ports to the valve cover, so i'll guess it is just a complex way for engine "fumes" to purge to the intake,, checked with honda dealer & it is simply an "air chamber"
;
just today, after a 10 mile drive, the accel-stalling problem recurred; checked that the "cannister" air chamber is properly installed; drove another 4 miles to my carport at which point the engine died again & the stall on accel recurs constantly now just sitting in neutral
warm engine only - on start it idles rough & surges before picking up normal idle
Re: Troubleshooting: '04 2.4Litre - Sudden rough idle and stalling on throttle
Since the intake airflow chamber had previously been disconnected with the car running, the likely culprit of the rough idle/stalling, etc. is due to debris or contaminant getting on the MAF/IAT sensor. Get some CRC MAF sensor spray cleaner to clean the MAF sensor. Walmart, Autozone, O'Reillys, etc. all carry CRC MAF sensor cleaner.

any ideas?
Unless the SULEV 2.4 (with MAF) is different... isn't there supposed to be a second smaller nipple piece coming off the plastic canister and going into the intake tube/bellow? It looks like its missing or even maybe broken off in your pic, hard to tell from that angle. If so you may have unmetered air that may be causing issues.
Again, unless this version of the 2.4 doesn't have it. I have the version without the MAF and it definitely has a second smaller nipple above the large one going into the intake tube/bellow.
Re: Troubleshooting: '04 2.4Litre - Sudden rough idle and stalling on throttle
nope - but an interesting idea to check since the bellows was replaced during last smog-chk due to underside crack
so - i bought a new air chamber 17138-RA-A00 it has the extra nipple vs old oem one - BUT FYI that nipple is blocked off on both chamber & the bellows, so if one need that nipple to function on a new chamber, one would have to drill out the blocked passage

solved Re: Troubleshooting: '04 2.4Litre - Sudden rough idle and stalling on throttle
solved maybe - i did 3 things after reading extensively in 2 Honda manuals AND purchasing a new TB gasket & a new air chamber
1. - removed & checked TB - (no carbon buildup or dirt, fyi at 175K miles ) - i gently cleaned off the butterfly per Honda & reinstalled TB
2. per above tip - i removed & inspected the MAF/IAT - it appeared clean, but i hit it with CRC - (since the MAF/IAT is upstream of the disconnected air chamber it seems unlikely that was a cause of any airflow contamination, but the fact the connector was disturbed during the filter change is also a possibility )
3. i also disconnected & used CRC contact cleaner on all the sensor connections, recalling that in the "old-days" a common first-step fix it for sensor malfunctions was "wiggle the connectors" - and at 16 yrs, one might ought to expect some oxidation to occur
end result - runs OK again - 1 38-mile test drive followed by 2 shorter ones - fingers crossed -
(sidebar - whilst i was at this accord, was also helping friend with a 1999 voyager that had the entire instrument cluster go dead -after much testing, the final easy "duh" solution turned out to be de-oxing all the connectors with Stabilant 22 - (get it on amazon))
