Legal or Illegal? Fuel Cell on the Streets?
is it illegal to run a fuel cell on the street? i asked a few people, and got mixxed reviews, can everyone or anyone just hint me whats legal or not, and if anyones had past experiences with this situation, thanks, Ron
There are plenty of old muscle cars running fuel cells in MN. Your best bet will be to check with your state's DOT, so that you will have a copy of the regulations to show the police officer if you get pulled over. One of the policemen in the town that I lived in over the summer kept giving me **** for having nitrous. I had him check with the DOT and we found out that it is fine to have nitrous in the car as long as the valve is closed.
its 100% legal in any state but it can be failed for emissions if you dont hook up the vapor recovery stuff, you cant vent it out to the atmosphere, all the vapors in the tank must be sent up to the charcoal canister up front where it is then routed to the engine to be burned.
ps...old muscle cars dont have that crap, they came with vented gas caps that just released the vapors right out.

Depends on local law. My alloy fuel cell is in the original position and even retained by (one of) the original straps. My car is pre pollution so everything is

2nd, it wouldnt be pre-pollution in the USA.For us, pre-pollution starts around 74 and down also depending if the car was built for CA or not then it would have pollution devices on it way back in the 60s.Oh yeah, one question, does your car have a vented gas cap cause i was wondering if i remove that vapor recovery stuff and put a vented cap on it will it fume me out or not.[Modified by D-Man, 11:28 AM 11/18/2002]
Yes my car is the 85 model in my sig.
In Australia 1986 is when they got serious with the switch to unleaded and clamped down on emmisions. Still no vehicle testing for emmisions tho.
My cap does not vent to atmo. I welded the same size fittings that were on the original tank onto the alloy cell. The cell only holds 20 litres.

That's funny hehehe. You don't know what it is but people are talking about it so you want one muhahahaha.
Fuel cell is a lose term for a special fuel tank. They are usually square plastic/acrylic tanks that are a universal fit. Often mounted in the boots of cars (if they have boots). Oh sorry you guys call them trunks hehehe.
Well this is my definition of a fuel cell but there is a thousand variations

You wont be able to run that at the track without some sort of firewall between the cell and your seat.....Question,that fuel filter, its on the inlet side of the pump, are you running another filter after the pump too?

I went through this while designing my project car (see sig.)
In California a fuel cell will automatically fail your car because there's no way to hook up all the emission lines (as said earlier.) So let's say you do hook them up correctly, will you pass then? NO!
The gas tank must be from a DOT tested car - period. No car I know of has fuelcells stock... ignoring F40s, XJ220s...

really? i never really read into the proper mounting of it, but didnt think it would be a big deal to keep it there, but alas, i was planning on using the stock gas tank next season anyways, and have a sump welded in, because ive heard that the fuel cell will only relegate me to running like outlaw classes, etc, i better get my read-on, thanks,

Also you cant ignore F40s and XJ220,they get the same test as any car and i actually did an F40 but it needed a little help to pass
