Tips on changing rear shocks on 99 accord
Hello everyone, I'm putting this out there as I never really saw a good set of instructions on removing the rear shocks and springs on my 99 accord. Most videos showed people fighting with the suspension, sittting on it and such to get the shock in and out for the rears. It might have been obvious to others, but it took me a few minutes to think of an easier way than fighting the suspension, especially if it's in good condition. I think I found the easiest way if someone ever wants to do it in the future.Basically the answer is to simply remove one end of the sway bar links and pull it out, then loosen all the control arms, but you do not have to remove them. Once you loosen all of the them (both sides) the suspension will then collapse pretty easily and the shock can be removed and replaced. It does take about 30 extra minutes to do it, but so much easier, especially if you are by yourself.
Also, I was lazy and discovered that to get to the upper bolts of the shock that are inside the car, you can push in on the sides of the bottom rear seat, and you have access to the bolt you need to remove in order to take the side bolsters out. then you pull down the rear seat, pull off the plastic cover, and you have access.
The key to remember is when you finish putting in the new shock and spring, put a jack under the suspension and push it back so where it would be if it was on the ground, and then re-tighten all those bolts you loosened. Otherwise your suspension will be wonky and bound up incorrectly, making the car feel weird.
Now to take the car for alignment, since I also refreshed all the front suspension components, tie rods ends, and a new steering rack and one axle seal as it was needed, the rear was done about a year ago.
