Default XTD Clutch - Honest Review (~6 months usage, w/pics)

So a lot of people seem to ask about XTD clutches.

Some people say they installed them and they aren't too bad. Others say they suck. Others say they are hit & miss.

Most who have them ate on a budget and aren't going to drop the transmission 6 months later to check on it, or at all unless something is wrong.

I spun a bearing. Just put my spare engine together and went to go use the same clutch setup.

So into my review. I got this clutch for not too much and it came with an extra slightly used ACT pressure plate as well as the XTD 6-puck friction disk as well as the XTD pressure plate.

While the XTD pressure plate was much lighter than the ACT, the friction faces inner diameter was wider than the inner diameter of the clutch material, so it would have worn a ridge into the clutch. Remember this is the plate that came with said clutch.

Because of this and being that the ACT pressure plate I received was in great condition, I set aside the XTD pressure plate in favor of the ACT, thus other than pointing out that I avoided running it and why, I can't review the pressure plate. I wouldn't recommend anyone to run one, unless somehow the friction faces were the same size, and even then I worry about the quality.

I also had a freshly machined Exedy HF01 9.5lb chromoly flywheel. So the clutch combination is the XTD 6-puck sprung friction disc, ACT HD pressure plate, Exedy light weight flywheel in a cable-actuated (Innovative adapter) S40 w/ITR LSD and LS 5th.

I didn't notice until today that not only was the clutch disc size mismatched for the pressure plate that came with it, the clutch disc was the wrong size in general. 8 1/4" diameter, should have been 8 5/8". So that wore a nice ridge in my flywheel and pressure plate. Maybe it was a k clutch.

Driving experience:
- felt decent from day 1
- good engagement, but liked to chatter (it was a 6puck tho)
- didn't slip at 7-9psi on b17a1 t3/t4 50trim 0.63 AR
- did not like slipping, if slipped for any amount of time it would start whining and then would feel like absolute ****. I never once smelled any clutch burning though, obviously I try not to slip my clutch at all really but daily driving in traffic with hills and a light weight flywheel, cable actuation and a torqueless motor
- shifting was fine

I admit I did not hate driving it. But I didn't love it either. Doesn't help I have cable actuation and a hydro box with a heavy plate but none of that is the discs fault.

Would I recommend buying one though? NO!

Based on the driving experience, you would think maybe I would. I admit I was planning on re-using it until I inspected it.

You would expect a 6 puck with harsher material to wear your flywheel/pp faster but I installed this literally 6 months ago and haven't done anywhere near my normal amount of driving due to COVID.

The disc itself has parts that have heat based discoloration, the wear on the fly wheel is raunchy and has left a bit of a ridge due to the wrong size.

This is the flywheel used with it:

For comparison, this other flywheel was used for about the same amount of time but much more milage with a stock style clutch (you can still see the machining marks)

Also, I used the pilot bearing from an Exedy hyper single kit, that bearing does not feel smoother anymore. Whatever bearing was in the other flywheel feels super smooth.

About 2000km of wear or less.

Friction material disintigrating around a rivet

Too small.

Pp wear ring and hot spots

Bottom line: For not much more you can get a brand name disc. I'm talking just the disc though.

If was the right size, I might consider reusing it but..I don't like the wear. I don't launch my car hard a lot, I don't beat on the clutch a lot but you wouldn't believe me looking at the pics. To be fair, the other flywheel I beat on the clutch a lot more of a lot longer with and it and the oem style disc still look new.

I'm going to order an ACT disc now, probably 6 puck sprung.

..and because of lack of parts availability and timing, it actually went back in for now..

So, I'll update this again when it comes out next. I don't imagine it will be a long time.

I just took my XTD clutch and flywheel out to replace after 150,000+ miles. It was 6 puck with 10lb flywheel. It didn't let me down and I should have bought another one. Instead, I bought a PSI clutch kit to replace it because of their ebay sponsorship and top seller reviews. I really screwed up on this choice. DO NOT BUY FROM PSI. here's a YouTube video I made to keep my community informed on what's out there.

One is mobile one is PC

Anyone else tried out other clutch kits?
