Default Main Relay

Crank but no start on first couple of hot days this spring.
Try it later in the evening, after outside temperature has cooled, and it starts right up.

This is my main relay finally acting up after 26+ years of service.

I have decided I want to try to fix it. Having been so dependable for so long, I know its a quality part.

I recall seeing a post here a long while back that showed how to apply solder to beef up those soldering connections to prevent heat from separating them, but I can't find it now.

Does anybody have any pics or maybe a video link that show the procedure? I've got a decent quality variable temperature soldering iron, flux and solder ready to go.

Acura Honda Main Relay Solution

After you resolder each connection, reflow any existing connection that may share the same relay.
This is just to make sure the mechanical strain on the board is equalized and there is no strain on the solder joints, which can cause cracking again.

Don't forget to test the ignition switch.
With the car on wiggle the key forward/backwards(not rotate), if the car cuts out the ignition switch is toast.

Thanks. That is the page I was thinking of. Yeah, it's relay. I have always been able to hear that relay, preignition, but no sound the other day when this happened. No gas at the fuel pressure regulator either.

I'm handy enough to desolder those joints, but not handy enough with soldering iron to put that nice cone shape back on them, so I'll have to find someone to do it. I thought someone said the same thing can be achieved by just slapping some more solder on top of the dried out joint, but maybe I'm wrong.

If you put solder on top of solder, you more likely end up with a cold joint and it is likely to crack. It would be unstable.

I hear you. I will avoid even trying that.

I gonna try to crawl under there this weekend and remove the relay to have a look at it.

For now, I can drive with this issue. I just need to keep it a little cooler in the cabin of the car. Even parking so the sun is mostly on the rear windshield makes a difference.
