Default confused about machine shop work

I want to rebuild my motor sometime in the near future, and I'm not really sure what all the terms mean and what I should/should not get done. I want to replace all the seals and put in some CTR or JDM ITR pistons. But I've seen things about treating the rods and crank (deburring, shotpeening?) and then cleaning up the head and blah blah.. is there a website where I can learn what all this stuff means? Also, is it ok to go .25mm overbore even if I don't need it? TIA..

ok dude, i'll help you out.
First off, I am assuming you have a b18a/b16a/b18c. First off, I would use oversize(o.s.) pistons(.25mm) and new rings in any engine. Both itr and ctr pistons are available in that bore size. To fit the O.S. itr or ctr pistons you will have to get the block bored o.s. That is nessesary to avoid too much piston to cyl wall clearance. too much of that and you will blow hella blue smoke out the exhaust. Its best not to take a chance, just do it. The shotpeening of the rods isnt absolutley nessesary. Basically they shoot bb's at a high rate of speed at the rod. This makes the surface harder and less likely to form a stress crack and fail. It just gives them more strength. I would do it.
If you have an non vtec motor, you need to get the rods narrowed to fit the desired pistons. The non vtec rods are too wide.
As for cleaning the head up, a clean engine is a happy engine.

You dont have to do any of this, just realize that the reliability of your engine comes down to the quality of the rebuild. ie: do it right the first time...dont skimp.

Good luck. Always Ask questions also
Unless you are building 600hp, dont worry about deburring. It uses money that can have been put to better use.

Ok, cool. What is deburring though, just out of curiosity? And is it worth it to have the rotating assembly balanced? How much does this cost? This is for a pretty mild N/A setup as you can tell. I just want reliability, and a fresh motor, so it will hopefully last me a long time.
