My brother has a 91 accord with the 5 speed and he is in the process of doing a clutch replacement. He is having issues getting the transmission re-installed in the car. It’s hitting on the frame. If anyone has any techniques to lining it up it would be very helpful
Did he remove the engine mount and tilt the engine to get the trans out, or did he merely muscle it out?
Unbolting the engine side mount, and tilting the engine a little will help get the trans in.
AT trans is a fatter piggy and it damn near installs itself. MT trans should be smaller and easier to get in.
Biggest problem he should be having is getting the mount lined up, and that's not even a problem.
Like Mad Mike said, tilt that engine and the transmission will keep from hitting the car frame. I don't know how you got that transmission off without tilting the transmission first because I had to do that else I couldn't figure out how to get the MT trans off without hitting the car frame. I replaced my 91 Accord MT clutch plate too about a year ago and I went thru the same thing (there is a whole thread on that). As you can and can't see from the photo below, the front center engine mount and the engine mount by the passenger side (there by the passenger wheel) were completely removed. The other two engine mounts were not touched. This was enough to tilt the engine as needed as long as you had a support underneath (floor jack to regulate the drop and supporting it by the oil pan). I only dropped the engine no more than 1/2" to accomplish the tilt needed.
Don't forget to put in a brand new flywheel and pressure plate if you change the clutch plate! Else you may have clutch engagement issues. If you go the route of keeping the current flywheel then might be a good idea to add a flywheel shim, else the clutch engagement will not be good, is what I've heard. When I changed my clutch plate I also change pressure plate, throwout bearing, and the flywheel for this reason. Another thing to keep in mind, is to add a ridiculously small amount of moly grease to the spline/input shaft. I'm talking so little that you can't even really see any. Use, as I did, a tooth brush to get the very small amount of moly grease on all the spline grooves. Too much of this grease (yes and you have to use moly grease) and you risk the centrifugal force, >~1800 rpm, flinging that super slick grease into the clutch plate and pressure plate, contaminating its surfaces and causing the mating surfaces to slip, erratically, during clutch engagement, instead of nice and smoothly.
