Default Daily driver Del Sol

Hey guys I was hoping you could help me with figuring out what to do. I have a 93 del sol with a d16z6 engine that has over 300k miles on it. I wondering what to do with the engine. It's old and it smokes I know I could have it rebuild and all that jazz but I'm really just looking for the best drop in option. I don't race or anything and the MPG is one of the reasons I bought it. I hate having to put higher octane gas in it but I do because it runs better. I can't find any D16Z6's in my area or online (ebay) for a reasonable price. I only paid 1600 for the car and all the engine's I've seen are close to a 1k. Am I missing something or am I stuck?

Thanks for any wisdom.

That’s pretty much the going rate for those, afaik.

Doing a swap to a B series wouldn’t be economical since you’re not interested in performance.

I might suggest looking into swapping in a different D series engine. You might have to get an ECU to go along with it, and you may save money on lower octane fuel. This would be the most straightforward, methinks.

I'm not sure about the transmission comparability with other series of engines. I assume a switch to a B would include a new transmission and ecu along with mounts and possibly a wiring harness too.

Would a D15 or D17 drop in and fit with little fuss or am I in for a fight no matter what?

Also I'm just assuming that any D16 would work better for what I trying to accomplish. Am I wrong?
And is there any engine I should definitely avoid?

Thanks for the reply!

I’m pretty sure that any D series will bolt in just fine, but others more learned than I can steer you rightly as to which engines are favorable and which ECU you’d need.

And yes, B-series require different trans, ECU, and possibly mounts.

If you're mechanically inclined, just rebuild the motor. You can buy brand new pistons and rods (from Speedfactory) for about $369. It includes piston rings too.

I had that thought too. But wouldn't the cylinders need to be honed?

You'll need tools to inspect your cylinders.

You can visually inspect the cylinders for scars and damages. If they aren't too bad, take the block to your local auto machine shop and have them bore it out to 75.5mm. The shop should be able to see if that's do-able or not......if they know what they're doing.
