Default Issue w/TDC at diff. Positions- valve adjustment

Hi all,

D16y7 engine, i put my camshaft back in recently and am doing a valve adjustment. When I rotate the engine from TDC at #1 to TDC at #3, the rockers have no clearance. The rockers on #3 have clearance when "up" is at the 3 o'clock position. I know #3 is at TDC when it is in the 9 o'clock position, so it seems like things are backwards. When I'm at TDC for #1 cylinder, the rocker arms do have clearance though. Can anybody tell me what I did wrong and how I can fix this?

I appreciate in advance!

Are you rotating the engine "Counter-Clockwise" when you move the cam gear 90' from TDC #1 to TDC #3 ??? This requires a 180' counter-clockwise rotation of the crank pulley.

Hey, i really appreciate the response,
Yeah, I always rotate it counter-clockwise. I should be at TDC when rotating the 90°, but as mentioned, there's no slack on the rocker arms. I was thinking maybe I put the cam in incorrectly, if that's possible.
The car didnt start before doing the head gasket and timing and does now, hoping im almost done w thia beast. I'm just stumped at what to do.

They could simply just be too tight. Are the lobes of the camshaft making contact with the rocker arms on the base circle ??? If so, just adjust the valves accordingly and see what happens.

Just to be clear, are you moving the crank shaft 180*?

If you are moving the crankshaft only 90* it's not enough.

Yeah, I mean it would turn 90° on the camshaft.
I checked everything out, readjusted like advised and there's proper clearance! Really appreciate the help

There is a trick so you only have to turn the crank shaft once to get through all the adjustments after putting #1 tdc.
  1. Set #1 to TDC
    • Adjust lash on Intake and Exhaust of #1
    • Adjust lash on Intake of #2
    • Adjust lash on Exhaust of #3
  2. Turn crank CCW 360* to set #4 to TDC
    • Adjust lash on Intake and Exhaust of #4
    • Adjust lash on Exhaust of #2
    • Adjust lash on Intake of #3

That's the short and sweet way to do valve lash when the firing order is 1-3-4-2 on our older Honda engines.

Is the mechanical timing set correctly?
