I had a heck of a time removing the alternator today, first because the service manual was a little confusing (regarding adjusting and adjustment bolts...I don't have the manual in front of me, just don't do as I did and remove the bolt going through the hole of the lower bolt that has a hole in it without removing the nut off the bolt with the hole, because it's in a tight area and lining it back up is a pain.) After getting the bolts off, I had to use a mallet and a big screwdriver wrapped in duct tape to pry it out.
When I got it off, there was a washer (not sure if it's a crush washer or normal washer) attached (by corrosion, likely) to the alternator on the top right hole where it sits inside the bracket through which the throughbolt goes. I see no such washer on the parts diagram (estore) for the alternator nor the alternator bracket. Additionally, the service manual does not mention it.
Is this washer necessary, and also how tight of a fit is the alternator supposed to be within the bracket where the top bolt (throughbolt) goes? Maybe it was there to tighten the fit? I know the belts were replaced at the dealership before I bought the car.
The through bolt bolt (#20) is a flange bolt, with has a slightly bolt head (they call it a special bolt). A flange bolts performs similar to a bolt with washer. If the bolt you removed was not the OEM bolt, someone probably added the washer.
Yes! And OK... that #20 is shown going through a washer, right? When I removed the alternator, the washer was inside the bracket and stuck to the alternator. The bolt on mine does have a flange.
