K20z1 EG Swap Questions
Wasup everyone? I’ve got a couple questions regarding a swap and I’ll try to explain it as best I can. Ive looked at nearly every post on these topics I can find and I’m still partially lost. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!
Me and a buddy are getting ready for our first Honda swap. It’s going to be a full K20z1 into a 1992 EG hatch. This is what we currently have:
-full K20z1, motor, trans, harness, ecu.
-02-04 type-s engine harness and conversion harness
-couple of other random swap parts
Our main concern is with the Z1 trans. Car is going to run a 02-04 kpro (reason for the 02-04 harness). Will the 02-04 engine harness plug directly into the Z1 trans without serious modifications? And then use the kpro feature to convert the signal to a low frequency for the speedo and Vtec to operate correctly? I’ve seen where you can swap bell housings, sensors, sensor “trigger ring” inside the trans, drill/tap,..... We are trying to do this the easiest cheap route without buying another trans.
Thanks a lot,
Spanky

You cannot simply select "low frequency" VSS in the KPro software and everything work... you will need to purchase a "high frequency to low frequency" converter and wire that in between the plug on the trans case and the VSS plug on the '02-04 RSX-S engine harness. This will make your speedo and VTEC function properly. K-Tuned has one for $170. This is not the cheapest way, but it is the easiest.
As for the fixes that you have listed:
You said "I’ve seen where you can swap bell housings (A mechanically challenging prospect and only cheap if you are skilled enough to do it and you got an '02-04 trans case and clutch housing for free), sensors (???), sensor “trigger ring” inside the trans (There is no such thing... it reads the gear teeth), drill/tap (Modifying the clutch housing can be done for the early style VSS... only cheap if you are a machinist and get a deal on an older VSS sensor),..... We are trying to do this the easiest cheap route without buying another trans." (No need to buy another trans... just know that easiest and cheap are rarely the same thing.)

Thanks a lot for the reply! From what I’ve seen, you do have to add the trigger ring (not sure of the correct term) to the trans if you’re swapping the 02-04 sensor into a 05-06 trans because one reads off of the final drive and one reads off third gear.
The 3rd gears themselves are the same in both the '02-04 and the '05-06 RSX-S transmissions, so there is no special "ring" required for the high frequency VSS sensor to read/get signal from... it doesn't make contact with the gear, it only gets really close and picks up the magnetic pulses that close the switch from each tooth of the gear.
The easiest way is to get the vss converter and if you want to use the Ktuned RSX race shifter/cables, I did a write up here on how to do that: https://www.k20a.org/forum/showthread.php?t=218905
Not sure what happened to the pictures but it gives you the instructions and hardware needed to accomplish it.
If you choose to go this route, set Kpro to "Normal Speed Sensor" with the converter installed.
