I know next to nothing about Hondas, other than they are popular swaps because of the durability of their engines and the aftermarket available.
I'm building a project, not swapping into a car. Think of a Lotus 7-type car where everything is made in house. I need to figure out what I want as a drivetrain and there are so many options out there. I have a few things swaying my decision, so please help me choose :
- Must be manual;
- I love a naturally aspirated engine.
- I'm not planning on tuning (not extensively anyway)
- I want something lightweight (preferably)
- I NEED something durable and reliable. Maintenance is fine, but I need to know that it can take a beating and not fail.
- I want something that delivers power beautifully and harmonically.
I know a K20/K24 is a popular choice. I was also looking at the J37 engine, which is about 120lbs heavier dry than a K20. Is the J37 a good engine? I've often heard that Honda manual transmissions are like glass and don't take much abuse. I don't really plan on modifying the gearbox...but I will if I absolutely need to.
IMO, B series (B16, B18) is the way to go for simplicity, reliability, and the stock transmission can handle quite a bit of abuse compared to a K series tranny. However, they are getting older and harder to find in good condition. You might be able to find a complete swap from hmotorsonline.com
B20a shouldn't be on the list if you want it compliant with aftermarket parts availability. Any of the type r engines are amazing engines out of the box but a little more costly. B18c, b16b b18c5, k series are the future for Honda in my opinion. Even a basic k20a2 would be a great start as there's many ways to go down the road with 300whp na achievable with a good 2.4l build.
