Default Ls/vtec engine question?

Bought a 92 civic HB with a ls/vtec swap as a project. The guy told me it had bad compression on cylinder 3. My question is what else to you guys think is wrong with the engine from this sound?

Could be a bad:
  • Head gasket
  • Piston
  • Rings
  • Rod
  • Cylinder sleeve
  • Head
  • Valves
  • Broken turbo encabulator or perhaps even the retro-encabulator (depending on how it was built really)
  • Lastly, the lunar waneshaft could be affected too

Well I think he was pretty honest about everything. I only payed $1000 for the whole car but it’s a stock ls b18b1 block with a gsr vtec head. He said it has low compression on cylinder 3 and it has bad engine mounts. When I start it it has a ticking sounds and it seems to run rich. I’ll to a compression check this weekend and post the results of that when I do.

What sound ??? Do a compression test. There is no way anyone here can offer up any useful information based on what little you have offered in this post. Do some additional testing and bring more specifics back here... then let's see what we can do to help.

And OP, I didn't hear any noise - you didn't post a video.

You could do your own compression and leak down tests to try and pinpoint the issue, but the best thing to do would be to tear the engine down, go through it, and fix whatever is wrong (like tony suggested).

Wow... that was 1:49 of my life that I cannot get back. Thank you for that DaX. punk0mi, I retract my "troll" assessment and place you back in the "you had to be there humor" category. Now, go and clean up/de-fragment that shoulder mounted hard drive of yours... that link should be deleted. The only glimpse of humor there comes from the fact that he kept a straight face through all of that blather. You too DaX.

OP, my apologies for temporarily hijacking your thread... now back to the regularly scheduled thread/topic.

Once you've had your dingle arm come loose at 70 mph in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel, next time you're going to pay a lot more attention to the lotus nut.

This thread didn’t go exactly like I planned. Just wanted to get some thoughts or any ideas people had but I guess that was too much to ask.

Check your valve lash and do the leakdown/compression test.
How does it run while driving?
Also get some timing covers on there!

Yes seriously the first thing would be to test the compression yourself. If the compression is indeed bad, there's a small chance that it's only that some of the valves are over-tight. Otherwise you will have to take the head off and examine the inside of the engine.
