Default Mini Me Swap Trouble

To start off I'm swapping a z6 head onto my d15b7, everything on the head is from a z6 minus the dizzy and exhaust manifold, running on a stock p28 the cam gear is set 4 degrees advanced it will crank but not fire up, I smell fuel, I have msd ignition wires which do spark, new plugs, new gaskets, I'm not sure if I'm having a timing issue cause it sounds like it wants to start but also when I'm cranking, the ground from the transmission to the frame rail smokes on the tranny

Remove the battery before your car catches on fire.

Check your wiring because something is grounding out, which likely is a power wire.

I could assume that would also make my car not start correct?

So I fixed my smokey ground by adding the valve cover ground and cleaning up the other two but now I'm still stuck with a car that will crank but won't start, I haven't added the two wires from the ECU to the harness mount for the v-tech but I don't think that would cause it to not start

Also I swapped my original head back on and was able to get it running aside from some timing issues

are you using a D16z6 timing belt? If not, that is your issue.
D16z6 -- 104 teeth
D15B7 -- 106 teeth

Yes I'm using the belt for a z6 and an adjustable cam gear with 4 degrees of advance timing

did you set the cam gear back to "0" when the motor is aligned to TDC??? You CANNOT set TDC with advance/retard timing

Not sure what you mean by "0" but I set it to were cylinder 1 all valves are closed at TDC and when I turn the crank clockwise the exhaust valves open next then the intake and so on

You sure the cam gear was set to TDC? The left and right marks on the sprocket ARE NOT SUPPOSED to be parallel with the cylinder head.

yes I counted the teeth and copied the marks from the z6 gear and transferred them onto the adjustable one, when I line up the lines to the back of the timing belt cover the valves for cylinder #1 are all closed then when I turn the crank clockwise the exhaust valves open next, then the intake. Should it be the other way around?

Also when I try cranking the engine there will be puffs of black smoke coming from the exhaust ports on the head

Update: I was able to get the engine to start, my problem was the distributor rotor wasn't lined up with the pin for cylinder #1 at TDC now my only concern is an agressive rocking from the motor when I turn the car off
