Icon5 From D series to B series Vtec

Hey everyone! I’m planning on a complete B series vtec swap for my 93 EG coupe . Which is currently a SOHC d16z6 vtec. Not familiar with the complete swap but my buddy has given me a free B16 head, so I was thinking of doing the swap starting with this free head I got . Since I am a noob to this B series swap, can you guys help out with the complete part list i’ll need for this project? Also, I don’t FOR SURE need to use the head I was given if that isn’t the best route for this swap. I don’t mind finding the correct head for the long block I’ll need . So far I’m thinking ill need : B16/B18 head , B16/B18 long block (with internals) , distributor, shift linkage , LS or GSR tranny , integra axles, ECU (from a vtec model) , intake manifold, exhaust manifold. This is all I’m aware of now . Any of parts that you guys know of or any advice would be awesome!

DO NOT get an LS transmission if you intend on enjoying the car's power/performance. Gears are way too long for 90% of applications.

Look into how to build a B20VTEC engine. If you're going to be re using the B16 head, this is a good opportunity to get a cheap B20 block and put the B16 head on it along with an LSVTEC kit.

Use a B16 transmission if you want to enjoy the performance. GSR is too long (imo) but would still not be as bad as an LS trans.

Edit: Just realized this topic is 2 months old and OP is long gone.

Hey , I now have a complete b16a1 vtec long block . I found an LS tranny that I was interested in buying . Would this still be a bad combo ?

Yes, terrible. Especially with the B16's low torque as a 1.6L

Get a B16 transmission.

Is the b16 transmission from a vtec model?

I see this reasoning all the time and I don't understand it. Unless you are building a 100% drag car and want to be above 6K rpm all the time and trap right at redline in 4th gear.... The LS tranny to me is great for a street car. Sometimes even it seems geared almost too low when you cruise at 4,000rpm on the highway, have no traction ever in 1st or 2nd and have to make the 1-2 shift after about 0.0001 seconds. Maybe it's just me or the power-to-weight level that I'm at, but I am happy with the LS and definitely wouldn't ever want shorter gearing for a street car application.

If you swapped in a b16 or gsr tranny you would probably be very surprised how much better the car feels over all. Hydro ls trans are really only good for a higher hp turbo ls or b20 in my opinion. I drove a b16 with a ls trans that didn't have vtec working and I could have sworn it was a single cam lol.

Cable ls trans is a different story though. I rather enjoy cable ls trannies

So the Vtec was not working for sure or did it seem like the Vtec wasn't hitting?

Oh?

Yeah I am one of the few rockin the '86-'89 (I believe) small spline cable LS trannies. Other than it showing its age, I have no problem with it. Although it is true I haven't driven on a b16 or gsr trans to see the difference.

But what would be the difference between LS hydro and LS cable? Same gear ratios I would presume?

Same ratios minus 5th gear if I remember right.

You can compare a 1st -> 2nd gear shift with almost any OEM transmission and the shift point will be similar, the differences start adding up in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear as the final drive and ratios start to have more of an impact on the speed per RPM/gear.

I've driven B16's with LS, and B20 (non VTEC) with LS on all motor cars. IMO, it's a terrible way to kneecap what would otherwise be a rev happy/responsive NA motor. I wouldn't even recommend an LS tranny to most people running a turbo unless they were pushing bigger power or had a specific purpose in mind.

The LS trans has it's place, but a lot of people aren't fans after sharing similar experiences as above.

I think you meant a '90-91 small spline LS tranny... the '86-89 won't bolt up to a "B" series engine. The '86-89 has the same bellhousing design as a "D" series does.

Oh yup, you're right. I was thinking of the year of axles I'm running.
