Default Any ideas

Hello everyone,
i have a 89 civic si.. all stock 1.6L
a few months ago I blew the head gasket on it. It had no problems no cel code or anything.
my mechanic did the job and ended up breaking the oem oxygen sensor from the harness side and rigged a red wire with a spade connector to it to plug into the female connector. After the job was all done and I started to drive it I would get a cel code within about 20 min. I’ve checked the code on the ecu passenger side floor board and it blinks a single red blink with no pause continuously. I did my research and know it’s for the oxygen sensor or oxygen content..I’ve gone to the junkyard and and harvested the oem wire for the oxygen sensor put it in as well as a few new sensors .I’ve even tried to put a sensor in with a non fouler. I’ve pulled the 10 amp hazard fuse to clear the codes. And I still keep getting this damn cel light, no matter what I seem to try I keep seeing this light
any help please
thanks
dave

The o2 sensor signal wire is a shielded wire. You need to make sure that only one end of the shielding is grounded for the wire that runs through the engine harness, as well as the chassis harness. Not grounding the shielding (or grounding both ends) can cause electrical noise to degrade the quality of the signal from the o2 sensor, and could lead to the ECU throwing a CEL.

How would I know if it’s not grounded... I would assume it would be because I didn’t have to go to far into the harness to fix the wire problem

If a large portion of the wire wasn't replaced, chances are the original ground is in tact - it occurs close to the shock tower plug. If the extension wire was just butt connected to the existing wire, it may be making contact with both the signal wire (as intended) and the grounded shielding (not intended). This could cause issues as well. Verify that the shielding is stripped back far enough from the new connection so that there is no way it can make contact with the signal wire.

Ok, I made the fix kinda under the distributor area.
i did strip bouth sides of the wire so that the inner and outer wires were exposed on both sides and then butt-connected them all together..so should I have connected the inner first ,and then the outside on top of that separate ??? And if so what would be the best way to do this..seems kinda hard to do the inside while not having much slack for the outside...
thanks

Correct - you should not have crimped the wire and shielding all together - the should be separate. Honestly best way to do it would be to pull the harness, remove the loom, and then you have all the room you need to work with. Or, at that point you could run a new shielded wire through the entire harness if you want. The o2 signal goes to C16 on an OBD0 ECU, and the shielding is tied into a ground wire that runs to A18 on an OBD0 ECU. By crimping the shielding to the conductor, you've essentially shorted out C16 (o2 signal) to ground (pin A18). I'm looking at a Sedan wiring diagram, so not sure if CRX is different.

Right on,
i will do some brain storming on this on how to make these connections correctly.. I dont really want to pull the harness but if it comes down to it I just might... I appreciate the help and when I attempt and complete this I will give an update on how everything worked out .
Should have an update within a few days to a week
thanks

*UPDATE*
Today I popped the hood and went to the oxygen sensor and disconnected it. I took a razor blade and peeled back the outer wire and did the same to the inner wire too. I then did the same process to the other side.
After that was all done I then put the two inside wires together with a dab of solder to hold them together and sealed it off with white heat shrink tubing. After that took the outside wire and meshed them together as nice as I could for the best connection and finished that off with heat shrink too. I put everything back together and pulled the 10 amp hazard fuse from the motor bay fuse box to clear the code and took it for a test drive around town and no cel code had appeared 🤘🏻...I will be taking it on some longer runs here within the next few days to see what happens then, but until then all is good and I am a happy driver...
thank you daX for the help,ur a life saver
and thank you Honda-tech
