94 civic d16z6 ignition timing off
first thing I kept getting a tdc code from distributor so I swapped it for a new aftermarket one and tried to set the ignition timing but it will only line up with my timing light at 8• with the distributor maxed out foreword not the 16• btdc like the spec says on the hood. Any suggestions where to start?
belt timing is on the money, I do have a vms cam gear and it’s set at 0 I just can’t get the ignition timing correct no matter where I move the distributor
nope lol I just realized I was setting up the timing light wrong🤦🏼 I was setting it to 16 then trying to line up the red mark which is wrong, 16 on the light should be at the white mark and 0 on the light should be where the red timing mark is. Haha I guess it been that long since I’ve set ignition timing 😂
If you aren't sure, take spark plug 1 out and probe in the cylinder to confirm that TDC is the single mark on the pulley. It is possible that someone put the pulley on without the key and the marks will be wrong.
You don need a timing light for spark timing. Warm up the engine and confirm the CEL is not on. Then turn it off and put the ECU test jumper in and re-start, the CEL should now be on steady. Attach timing light to wire #1. If the light has a dial, set it to zero. Adjust for the group of 3 marks on the pulley. Use either the center one or try the leading one if you don't get any pinging on a test drive with the center one (remove ECU test jumper for driving).
If the adjustment does not come in near the center of the distributor's adjustment range, consider that the cam timing may be wrong.
