Default Fast left turn signal when applying brake?

I've got a 91 CRX and just recently my left signal began blinking rapidly - however, it only happens when I apply the brakes. The headlights, wipers, radio, etc. have no effect on this, it's only when I apply the brakes that it blinks rapidly, and when I release the pedal, it returns to normal. Also, when the signal is NOT on, the dash light will very faintly illuminate when I apply the brakes.

I've read elsewhere that replacing the bulbs may be the fix, but I figured I would pose the question here to see if anyone else had a different experience with fixing this issue.
