Hey all,

Rebuilt my b16 transmission with new syncrotech bearings, syncros, helical quaife lsd, ls 5th gear. I measured the tolerances for the lsd and it was in spec. Reused the needle bearings, seemed fine.

Car has no issues before rebuild, did this just for lsd and ls 5th. I did not spin 1st or 2nd gear on countershaft prior to rebuild, so really dunno what it's supposed to feel like.

Everything went together pretty well following honda street garage's video's on youtube and several other how to's. , .

Case is back together, the counter shaft nut is new oem honda, was torqued to 80, then 0, then 80.

2nd gear on the counter shaft spins fine, really easily, 1st gear takes some effort to spin but does. I realize 1st gear has the split needle bearings, I greased them with engine oil before putting back in. anyway, case is back together car goes in all gears..

I have not started it yet, is it ok if 1st gear takes some effort to spin? I didnt have a press, so used a hammer to get 4th and 5th gear on countershaft to go on. Everything does seem fine.

am I overthinking things?

1st should spin freely. Did you install the synchros dry or wet? Tangs on friction dampers and 1/2 hub lined up?

 

the syncros may not be super covered in oil, I did not bath them in oil upon install, I just oiled the shafts after everything was assembled.

This could definitely be the issue. Great point on the syncros.

Everything went back together smoothly if that is what you are asking, I had to lightly hammer on 4th and 5th gear with a socket on center, because I didn't have a press.

Do you think I can get away with just filling the trans with oil spinning it over a couple of times and hope for the best or does this thing need to come back apart.

I'm thinking when bathed in oil everything should loosen up?

Because the synchro is now "pressed ON" to the gear and both could be damaged if it runs.

The video you posted is not a Honda transmission. It's a T10. It does not use an oiling system, the gear stacks just sit in the pool of fluid. Honda transmissions are not like that. They use an oiling system and the fluid is dispersed to the synchros from inside the shafts via the slots on the gear cones. It's a very efficient and reliable system; if the transmission is properly assembled in the first place (meaning the gear cones/synchro is not assembled dry).

You won't know if there is damage until you either tear it down or it starts having issues prematurely.
