Engine only starts with distributor all the way advanced
93 Accord, recently swapped a junkyard F22A1, and it ran great be for a while.
One day I went to start it, and it wouldn't start.
Replaced spark plugs, wires, injectors, igniter. Finally got it to start, but only with the distributor turned as far counterclockwise as possible.
This made me think that my timing belt maybe skipped a tooth. Pulled the upper timing cover, and tried to set the #1 piston to TDC, but realized this motor doesn't have a pointer on the lower cover, or any marks on the crank pulley. So I pulled the #1 spark plug, and used the dipstick to eye TDC, and i checked the flywheel mark and the pointer was right on the 15° mark. The cam marks were where they are supposed to be, which leads me to believe that the timing did not jump a tooth. I'm at a loss now, and don't know what to do.
If the flywheel is right on the 15° mark, is that not TDC? How do I set the #1 piston to the proper TDC without the crank pulley marks?

Where it is on the 15° mark @ TDC, I would say that you jumped a tooth on the timing belt. When you look at the timing marks the flywheel it should be on the TDC 0° (white) mark when the No1 piston and camshaft pulley is at TDC.

Removing the spark plug on number one cylinder and
Using the dip stick to see when it gets to top dead center was a smart idea
Were the valves all closed at that point? Were they on their timing mark?
(sometimes one might make a mistake about the cam timing marks?)
That would mean the timing was correct
If not then the timing is off.
Don't know what the fly wheel mark would be used for timing belt??
Guessing you have to make the piston on cylinder one go to top dead center first
Then if the cams are off .. to take belt off and move them til they are on timing mark.
Check to see piston is still at TDC and the cams have closed all the valves.
Lock the position in and put belt back on
Double check again that piston is TDC and cams have all valves closed
