What engine is best for me?
I'm very unfamiliar with crx's since i have mostly worked with the egs and eks. what i'm wondering about is what engine to put under the hood of a 91 CR-X Si. i'm looking for better performance with fuel economy in mind yet be able to source parts easily. This car will be my DD and putting a whole crapload of miles a day.

for a daily driver, there is no need for a bseries swap. If you are unhappy with the stock d16a6, I would through an sohc vtec from a 92-95 si/ex or 96-00 ex and be done with it. you can use your stock tranny, just need to take care of electronics (do a search). It should be pretty cheap and give you nice pep with reliability in your DD.
I agree with ricodemus, plus you will also have the familiarity of the engine to your advantage.
But if you are just not happy with a SOHC then you could get a b18 A or B. the LS tranny is good for gas mileage, and you'll get some good low end torque out of the motor.

If your looking to be cost efficient, you can get a ZC DOHC (engine only) from www.nippon-motors.com for $445. You can use your Si tranny, flywheel, and axels too. This will save you money in the long run and it's a direct swap. If you want some more power you can go with a B16A, but keep in mind this is not a direct swap. You will need motor mounts which can cost up to 500 dollars.
I did a b18b swap...its not worth it unless youre going to turbo.
Im never swapping a b series again. For the money youre going to spend on a swap you could turbo youre d series, or build the crap out of it. If you turbo, you could have a reliable 14.0 throwaway motor that can be replaced for $100.
D Series Power.

You're right about built/boosted d series being time bombs..but if you have a turbo..you can get an entire d series for....(searches parts trader)
D16A6-complete motor w/ 5spd tranny,pm6 ecu, stock shift linkage, no wiring-out of 90 crx si. 172,xxx miles.-$275
You can get the longblock for a ton cheaper. So you blow an engine after a year...so you swap in a $150 engine...big deal!
Im just saying..after driving my sohc zc with i/h/e bored tb, lsd, and light flywheel...that only...I wont go back to a b series swap.
