I am looking at all options available for front LCA replacements on a CRX. My bushings are pretty shot, and rather than try to replace them individually, swapping out the entire arm seems much more efficient.
I would prefer poly bushings, but every option I can find either has hard rubber or spherical bearings. I know the sphericals are not good for a street car, so I guess I will go with rubber unless anyone knows of a decent poly option.
- Skunk2 and Hardrace both make some that I'm sure are decent, for about $200 for the set. This is what I am leaning towards.
- Then there's Mevotech etc. other OEM replacement brands that can be much cheaper.
Am I wasting my money by going with Skunk2 or Hardrace? Any reason not to buy these?
From a performance perspective, I assume they have stiffer bushings which I would prefer. But as far as longevity, fitment, etc. goes if anyone has experience with them I would like to find out whether they are worth the cost.
You’re right - they’re stiffer than stock. I just got the Hardrace myself, so I don’t know the longevity of them, but I only drive my car in summer, so that’s not a big concern.
But I’d assume that they’d last as long as any stock replacement at least.
I got an entire bushing set from hard race and pressed out the old bushings. I had to turn some pieces of metal to press on just the outer race of the bushing. The bushings in the lower control arms were rusted in there, so I had to cut them out with a skill saw and hammer them out. If you don't have tools to do this job I'd just recommend getting the entire control arm.
I'm satisfied with the bushings. They are stiffer, but aren't too harsh for daily driving in my opinion. I have new shocks and my car is at the stock ride height, so that probably helps soften things up. If all your bushings are shot it may be a good idea to get them all done.
Are the LCA bushings the only thing you're going after?? And why would you prefer poly?
I installed a full PIC/Sonem hard bushing kit on my 90 Si HB in 2010. It was about $180 I believe, but it's been a while. It included like 36 bushings.. I forget. I purchased a $140 hydraulic press from Harbor Freight since the local machine shop wanted to rape me for $10-$30 per pressed bushing. It was honestly not too difficult after you get past the rusted suspension bolts. I did snap some suspension bolts off and had to replace all 4 shocks, but it was needed regardless.
No squeaks, since it was hard rubber and not BS poly. The ride is definitely more stiff, and I still don't have any clunks or broken bushings to this day.
Original plan was to do a master poly bushing kit. I am trying to get everything tightened up, and will be riding on 550# springs front and rear so I want everything to match. Always used poly bushings in the past and have been happy with them.
But after reading what a pain it is to replace the front lca bushing, decided I would just get new arms. Plus I already have S2 rear lower arms, front uppers, and poly RTA bushings. So the front lca is my main concern at this point.
I will be alright with harder rubber. Thinking I will order the Hardrace lca’s at this point.
