B18b1 timing belt troubles
I'm sure this has been asked many a time, but I'm confounded. Background: I traded an oil guzzling corolla for this 95 teg ls with a b18b1. I stand by this deal, though, despite giving it a pretty thorough lookover, I discovered a few unexpected problems with it upon taking it apart.
The previous owner had done a bunch of DIY work on it, including a timing belt job. I knew it was misfiring, and thought it was bent valves from the bad timing job, but turned out the timing was just off. Checked compression and it's there, but low/high in cylinders 2 and 3.
I took everything apart and tried to reassemble, but there was always, always a tooth of slack between the cams gears, even with punches in them and the marks lined up. Did it by the book to no avail. Inspected the belt and water pump and they're 126/22 teeth - GSR belt kit.
However, from what I've read, the GSR belt should work as long as the GSR pump is used, too. Any thoughts or advice on this? I figured I'd ask before throwing more parts at it.
any advice is welcome, thanks!

I believe that is incorrect. I'm pretty sure the head's are different heights. So you can either get the right belt & water pump, or get a vtec head.
Make sure the belt is installed correctly by the book, or it will always be loose. You have to turn the engine over (IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION) multiple times to get the belt tight and set. Failure to do this will lead to a broken belt and a tow truck.
If the belt was the wrong number of teeth, the car would not run at all after the first couple revolutions, as the cam and crank would get out of sync. 125 teeth for non-vtec, 126 for vtec. If you swapped the pump out to the GSR, I'd double check the crank gear teeth/size is the same for both engines.
If it were my decision, I'd probably switch back to the stock components, and stop trying to mix and match. It's a headache for anyone who ever has to change the belt, including you, if you forget what belt you bought.
Yea, you can't use the GSR/ITR water pump and timing belt on the LS B18b like some people say you can. I'm pretty sure the heads are different heights and it just won't ever work out perfectly. Just go buy a stock LS timing belt and water pump and install it by the HELM's manual.

I’ve used gsr oil pump and gsr water pump with no problem on a stock LS turbo.
Try checking your crank gear making sure it’s not on backwards. Original owner could have installed backwards which could cause a few teeth off at timing. And also put a long stick in cylinder one and hand crank till TDC and see if the crank gear line up with the timing cover mark.

GSR Block has 212.39mm deck height
I have never heard anything about cylinder head height differences, but I can tell you for a fact that the B18c and B16b blocks are 0.55mm taller than the B18b and b20 blocks.

The water pumps are not the same. They have different amounts of teeth on them. The oil pumps are all the same.
NVturbo He said crank gear, not pulley. Two different things.
Besides that I'm not sure how you'd put a gear on backwards, if you could it wouldn't change anything anyways.

What you have not done is used a gsr water pump with an LS timing belt. This will not work!

yes you are correct I forgot to mention I used a gsr belt with the gsr water pump and oil pump. Also I’ve already tried long ago just for ***** and giggles with extra motor I had out with gsr oil pump and gsr water pump and ls belt, it won’t work cause ls belt throws timing off.
Also the crank gear CAN go on backwards and WILL throw off the timing a few teeth off. OP since you have the timing components off already it doesn’t hurt to pull out the crank gear to double check in case of the previous owner didn’t install backwards.
