Supercharged or Turbo?
well, i've been having a dilemma as of lately whether i want a turbo or a supercharger. i don't mind the turbo lag, but superchargers are more reliable so now i'm leaning towards that. now what i'm wondering is, how much boost can a d16y8 handle with stock internals? i know for a turbo it would be about 5-6psi, so maybe its the same for a supercharger? i'm not going to want lots of power or else i would consider a turbo definitely. i just want more power but not that much for a daily driver, so a jackson racing supercharger sounds pretty sweet for what i want. also, give me an estimate on what i should be able to run in a 1/4 mile with a jrsc, i/h/e, and a test pipe (mid 15's?) i'm not going to be using the zex kit anymore since i am going to sell it to a friend of mine.
If you are gonna spend the money to turbo or supercharge the DX motor then depending on how much you wanna spend I would just buy a swap or save for one.... There is a lot more stuff you'll be able to do later... Even a B16 is a good start, however if you can afford a GSR that is the way to go.. Latez
First off, you can definitely run more than 5-6 psi on a stock D16 bottom end. A friend of mine ran low to mid 13's on his with a stock bottom end, nothing major added other than a Greddy kit (w/ intercooler) and a 2mm head gasket. Boost was at 1 bar. And the motor was daily driven, and lasted for around 2 years (it finally blew after being driven at redline for about 4 minutes on full boost). You can't get that kind of performance out of a JR setup. And if you think the JR kit is actually more reliable than a Greddy kit, you're mistaken. In truth, you have two sensible options here, the Greddy kit w/ intercooler or a B16 swap. The B16 swap alone will get you into the mid 15's no problem, and be the most reliable of all three options. If you want mid 13's to 14's, just get the Greddy kit, it's a fantastically good match for your engine (full boost before 3000 RPM).
