Short Whistling Sound at Start up. 1996 Honda Civic EX
1996 Honda Civic EX - 1.6 V-Tech, 4 Dr (US Model)
Hi guys. Hope you help me figure this out. Every time I start the engine, I hear a short lasting whistling sound. It sounded like a belt skipping but it was not. I replaced the belts (Bando brand). A friend told me it sounded like it was around the starter and that it might need some grease. He is not a mechanic though. What could be the problem? Is my starter going bad? Can it be greased and where exactly? Anything else that can make that whistling sound around that area? No whistling noise while driving, just at start up and for a fraction of a sec. Multiple answers welcomed. Thank you for your any help you can provide.

Dont try to grease the starter. Stop listening to your friend. Locate exactly where the noise is coming from.
Possibly the idling pulley.
Possibly the intake tube.
Narrow down location of noise.

Greasing a starter? Somethings just can’t explain stupidity. You need to knock the starter with a hammer, when it’s being intermittent. Don’t listen to your friend, and if I were you I’d end the friendship immediately
EDIT: There’s no belts in the starter area. This all sounds exactly like a alternator belt. Is it new? If so check the slack on the belt and tighten it accordingly.
