Hello, just got done my seat project and thought I'd share.
My car had torn bolsters on the drivers side that have been bothering me for years. I found someone selling an imperfect seat cover (ebay) and decided to use that for a donor.
Used a thread ripper to remove the donor bolster / old bolster
Donor bolsters had holes from different types of seat, patched up those holes w/ extra fabric
Sewed new bolster on (this was a PAIN, I did not know how to use a sewing machine until last night! Thread tension is KEY)
Washed the cover in the washing machine on cool, dried in the sun (nice day out)
The foam was falling apart, leaving foam dust everywhere. Sealed up the foam bolsters using auto upholstery adhesive and garbage bags as a cover. Seems a bit ghetto, hope it works out. Helped with reinstall as well since the surface was slicker... did not tear or fall apart when reinstalling covers.
Reinstalled using zip ties (I hope they hold up; Used larger ones from home depot; Commercial Electric brand)
The donor bolsters are a little lighter, I think they are from a european ED7.
That was all done, and noticed that the fabric on the passenger upper bolster was falling apart so replaced that one too.
Overall I'm happy with it. It was a pain in the *** but worth it considering you can't find OEM covers for our cars. I'll update again with and longer term issues.
do you have any before pics
so we can see what you really fixed ?
Hmm that would have been a good idea... but no, I always had a t-shirt on the drivers seat to cover up the crapped up bolster. It was ripped to shreds though, the entire left bolster on the drivers side. The seat foam was coming out and leaving bits everywhere.
On the passenger, the upper of the bolster that the headrest sits between fell apart on me when I removed the cover... no pics of that either.
Nice work. Sometimes I wish my interior looked that good again. Then, I remember I ripped all of that out to save the 20 lbs
It's good to see another 89 hatch in my area getting some good care.
I remember finding a thread a while back about buying seat fabric. It was through Detroit Fabrics, charcoal something... I'll see if I can find it.
Seat repair folk usually use some sort of saran wrap or shrink wrap plastic over the repaired foam. You can buy seat foam in blocks and glue it on with spray adhesive, and then cut and mold the bolsters as you wish. An old buddy of mine did that for my seat.
zip ties are looking so much easier than hog rings. Last one i did, i used the copper hogs rings. I think next one i will try the zip ties. I have always just used old couch foam, cut away with a. hand saw or sharp serated steak knife, and hot glue to the old foam to buld it up to shape.
