I have a 92 civic vx with a d15z1 motor. Showing a code 3 and have done everything the manual has advised to do. So now I need a new ecu. I have a P07 and wanna get a better ecu. I have people telling me to get a chipped p28. I'm not too savvy when it comes to upgrading. I was just gonna get the p07. And call it a day. What should I do?
+1. The VTEC-E ECU is the only one that will properly control your D15Z1 engine. It's optimized for mpg and does a good job at that. You really can't "upgrade" a VX for more power without replacing the whole engine. Also there are two versions of the ECU, depending on whether the car was built for California or the other 49 States, so be sure to get the right one. Bottom line is don't mix VX parts with the other versions.
You've probably already checked this, but putting the wrong harness plug on the MAP sensor can cause a code 3. The MAP plug has one of the wires solid white.
Okay thank you! I'll be sure to get right on that. My cars is Canadian so idk if that helps? But yes there is a solid white wire of the three and I have checked voltage going to the wires and then back probed the ecu on connector d17 and d21 and got the required 3 volts. Manual then stated it was an ecu problem. So I'll definitely get on getting a new ecu.

three versions actually.
92-95 49-state spec -- 37820-P07-A0x -- wideband(used for lean burn mode for high mpg) and EGR control
92 cali-spec -- 37820-P07-L00 -- wideband and EGR control (EGR and lean burn disabled)
93-95 cali-spec -- 37820-P07-L0x -- P28 based ECU with the maps for the Z1
but yes do not mix/match VX ECUs with other honda ECUs unless its chipped with the right maps (which is not common)
technically you can use anything.... but depending on which version you have now.... you may need to convert your harness to 4-wire O2 sensor.
finding a 37820-p07-L01 or 37820-p07-L02 is not easy, but they are out there.
You will loose some mpg due to loosing lean burn mode.
note: these numbers are on a label on the side of the ECU, which is located under the carpet on the passenger's side outer kick panel.
