I recently did an input shaft bearing on a 1997 Honda Civic HX manual trans (y5 vtec-e block).

I wanted to share with the community something that was frustrating me about the trans, and maybe someone with experience can chime in and explain why.

Once I re-installed the main shaft and counter shaft, the shift forks, and the "reverse shift holder" (see image) I was able to engage all gears appropriately EXCEPT for reverse-

I couldn't figure out why this little linkage arm was stopping the pin on the reverse shift for from shifting the car into reverse. However, once I re-installed the case onto the transmission, viola, it works perfectly.

I inspected the inside of the cover but I still couldn't see any interaction with the cover that would allow that linkage to move, and let the trans shift into reverse. I believe the reason that little link is there is so that if youre in 5th gear and try to shift into 6th it will block you because there is no 6th, only reverse.

Anyways, just thought I would share that and maybe someone can explain why

Don't know. Take it apart again and see if it's still doing it.
