i read some threads about a specific allignment that decreases the surprise buttsex from oversteer

just got my s2k (2002 ap1) with espelir springs
got stock wheels with extremecontact dws06 tires
but even with those it kicked out very hard when i was testing it out
turned into an uphill street and stepped on gas a little bit purposely to break traction to see the limits and it kicked out without any notice lol. didnt spin out but i did not like how it kicked out at all. was very hard to get it back in line.
it was a bit wet also

i dont know what kind of specs are on the current allignment either
besides cornering it drives fine. and it keeps somewhat decent traction on dry pavement.
but i can feel it wanting to move to the side alot when i drive
always feel one of the wheels chirp slightly on the corners

im planning to get 06-07 shocks and springs and wider tires on it later once i save up some cash
17x8 17x9 rear with some ultra high performance all season tires like dws06 or gmax or whatever i can find

questions
what allignment specs should i go with for best cornering traction( mostly to minimize oversteer)
what suspension is best for that? i read that they readjusted the suspension alot through the years because people kept crashing them due to rear tire kick out
anything else i can do to teh car to minimize the oversteer and rear kick?

PS: for captain obvious. its obvious that better driving skills help which is not what im asking. so you can move on now...

 

If you use the search function on the forum, questions like this have been answered 100,000 times with 100,000 different setups from oversteer to understeer. Look it up.

 

Alignment specs should be whatever the OEM recommends. Softer spring rate in the rear (AP2) would help a bit.

Personally I loved the tail happy nature of my AP1, but to each their own. I know for AutoX purposes a lot of people preferred the Ap2.

these threads been up since 2001 and nobody bothers to update or clean up the threads. they are full of junk
maybe 10 years ago it was a valid responce to refer someone to threads because they were actually maintained and had images etc.
now its just bunch of crap with broken links and deleted images..

tail happy is great on dry pavement.
in washington it rains most of the year. not so great for happy tail when car goes sideways faster than you can let off the gas pedal. not even going fast maybe 25-30mph with dws06 tires

there are specific alignment specs people found that reduce oversteer but most of them are aimed at auto-x or specific racing.
i saw one thread mentioning other than oem allignment specs that said worked well for street driving but i lost it and cant find it again i dont even remember what forum it was on

This is called snap oversteer. It occurs when the rear suspension reaches its limits in travel and then it lets loose. Try being smoother in transitions at turn in to apex and limit jerking the car to induce this. My 80 yo dad has an S2000, It is a very sensitive car to steering input when not in stock form. Dad's car has been on various shock/spring combos finally setteling on bielsteins with matching springs. For his this was best ride/handling combo for him. Yes, Dad will wear you out in a race.

i know what its called. im asking how to minimize it.

I have an 02. My personal experience is that for street driving going back to the stock oem tire and suspension set up (if you have modified it) will work well. No perfect, but pretty darn good. I think there are definitely things that can be done to reduce oversteer and induce understeer. Best to search on s2ki.com.

 

Universal methods for reducing oversteer on an FR car:

Stiffer front sway bar
Stiffer front springs
Stiffer front damping
Narrower front tires

Softer rear sway bar
Softer rear springs
Softer rear damping
Wider rear tires
Stickier rear tires

 

Well, the simple answer is become a better driver. Snap steer is driver induced. Yes, you can spend a ton of money in stabilizer bars, springs and tires but the best thing you can do is be patient and learn to drive this car.

 

 

I agree with this advice.
I got my 2000 AP1 new, with 7 miles on the odometer. I ran it stock for years. I experienced some snap on extremely rough terrain, like railroad track crossings, but it always corrected.

What really impressed me is that the torsen differential will straighten up the car at launch, but admittedly that's mostly in a straight line.

After running stock for a while and noticing some bump-steer, I started asking for the Honda UK specs when paying for an alignment. You can find these online. This really improved the car to perfection. It's got a hair trigger on the steering with those settings, so you have to be subtle. But the car is tight.

Keep in mind that the Honda racing team designed this car, and I happen to think it's rather difficult to improve on stock. You might as well start stock, get used to the car that way, and then make your own mods if you feel unhappy with stock.
